• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

2022 Route 66 Ride

What is a burro....

A donkey.

They can be a real problem on the roads at night in some areas! . Here in Oz, we have some places where the feral donkeys are almost as thick as the kangaroos on the roads, especially at dawn and dusk; and in the numbers they reach fairly quickly in a good season, they can really devastate fences, crops, dams, water troughs & sources, the native vegetation, & cause a lot of erosion PDQ too!

After I sent this message I was like "dummy you know what a burro is!" Anyway, what's the next step in making this trip a reality? From the many posts there is enough interest.

No harm. At least you didn't ask if it was a large burrito!

Yeah, back when you first put up post #19 Doc, I must admit that 'burrito' was what I 'saw' first!! :opps:

But in my defence, I have been to places where you really hadta watch out for the local burritos - they could make your life a miserable hell for weeks! :gaah: Thankfully, that sorta burrito isn't really all that common, so I sincerely hope that any of you who make this Route 66 trip (colour me jealous btw!) don't find any of those. As for the burro's, seeing them is fine, just so long as you don't run into any! :lecturef_smilie:

From Kingman I40 exit 53 to Crookton I40 exit 139, I have never seen a burro.
Probably 100 trips from 2001 to 2021 and maybe 50+ trips 1994-1997.

But many burros a few miles before and after Oatman (red map marker), in the surrounding mountains.
The Oatman Highway is less traveled than Kingmanto Crookton.
It has some steep winding areas. When I travel there, I think about my grandparents traveling over that road circa 1920, probably in Model Ts coming from Texas (fraternal) and Tennessee (maternal).

This satellite map better indicates the type of road.
If you enjoy history, read about the Oatman family encounter with the Yavapai (possibly Mojave) tribe.

If it's paved or hard-pack, I'll play. RT don't like 2-track (or 1-track for that matter!).

AeroPilot, is that the 8 mile section east of Yarnall?
US 66 from Crookton (exit 139) to Kingman is 90 miles and only 17 miles farther than I40.

Until about a year or so ago, the route 66 emblem was painted at Crookton. A lot of tour buses stopped there for photos.
Probably too many taken mid-highway, so now painted over.

Ray BJ . GUYS and all that are interested in making this happen, i know its a bit early but can we start to look at dates. i am ready after the first of august....also would like to map it out to mount rushmore then to crazy horse monument that would be the last stop in this jouney from there i am heading east to nj and up to lake george for spyder quest. I am hoping we all can meet in chi town on the 1 of august......

I just returned from a trip across the upper US to Yellowstone (13 days early June). Hit most of the attractions along the way once in SD and westward. Didn't do Crazy Horse or Pikes Peak but got in Badlands, Beartooth, Needles, Deadwood, Old Faithful and Million $ Hwy in the 6100 mi loop. Averaged 470mi/day. Temps from 50 to 102.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Rt 66 has been on my bucket list for quite a while.
Perhaps I can join if the stars align. I'm retiring Dec 31 and need something
to look forward to. I rode a lot of Rt 66 when I was commuting to college in 1970. Minnesota to New Mexico.
Do you plan to camp or motel?
How fast and long (hours) do you ride? I have been with too many groups where 2 or more riders becomes a race which is not for me.
I'm not pokey but like to enjoy the sites and take photos too.
Count me as a definite maybe. I can meet the group in Chi town.
Cheers,

We might be interested also as this trip develops if tag alongs are welcome. We have talked about this trip for years and never got it done. We prefer motels and not in a footrace to get there - both retired and want to smell the roses along the way.

Please let us know if a group thing comes together.

HI Ray. that sound like a fun trip. I am really interested in Pike's Peak and Crazy Horse, if there is more on the way, then great! Just trying to get this trip on better footing, I know it's early and some one asked can any one join in; all are welcome as far as I am concerned - I just want to ride.

I'm up in Wyoming and thinking about meeting up with the group in New Mexico somewhere to ride on to California . I would be pulling a trailer and camping.
