2021 RT Ltd - needs a "Lower" Foot Brake Pedal - anyone used an adjustable rod?

Hi,

Old story, spent more than two decades on 2 wheels using hand brake 95% of the time. The more I have ridden the Spyder, the more comfortable I have become using the foot brake. Previous ankle injuries and age make lifting my foot "quickly" to engage the foot brake challenging. For safety reasons, I want to be able to just rotate my foot over the brake pedal with minimal lifting of my foot to engage the brake. I have already removed the rubber brake pedal cover and covered the brake lever foot pad with grip tape. That helped a lot. Looking for more.

Hand brake modification last consideration simply due to cost. See two other modifications available: 1) driver foot board risers, and 2) adjustable brake rod.

I'm 6' 2'' with more legs than torso, so don't want to raise foot boards more than necessary.

Looking for anyone with experience using an adjustable brake rod to lower brake lever.

Thanks

Just be careful that you don't get the pedal to low and don't get the full throw of the pedal. You would not want to get into a situation where you need to mash the brakes and not be able to get it where you need it! Maybe saving your pennies and rethinking the hand brake would be a good thing. Good luck, be safe!

I've been using an adjustable brake rod (from SlingMods) for a couple years now without issue on my 22 F3S.

It took me a few rounds of adjust/ride/adjust/ride to get it juuuust right. I have no complaints with it at all. My wonky ankle can now operate the pedal without issue.

Just this spring I added the hand brake from ISCI, but still left the adjustable rod in place. Works just fine.

I think that the reason that the brake pedal is so high is for safety reasons. If one of the brake circuits fails for any reason then there is enough travel on the pedal to apply the remaining circuit before the pedal becomes level with the footboard. I remember on my 2016 RT that there was a mechanical link so that if the pedal moved over a certain amount due to brake failure on one circuit, the footboard tilted down at the front to allow for extra pedal travel.
