• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

2020+ SEAT Strut issues - a different solution!

Does anyone know of an upgraded strut for the seat of a 2020 RT-L like the one for the tour pack?

Some of the vendors on this site have the new seat strut listed from Showchrome/Big bike parts. P/N 41-269.

Thanks PW, I think this what I'm looking for. I've been fussing around with this problem for a while now spending a few $ here and there and getting springs that don't work, and don't fit. Not spending $40 right now on a new strut, pulling off tupperware and up under the machine, maybe later. Those picture sure helped.

There is no tupperware to be removed on the 2020+ models. I did mine without removing anything.

If you don't want to use the spring, Lamonster Garage has a seat strut replacement which is more than twice the holding power as the original strut. Easy to replace, and instructions with pictures is included. Costs more than $4.00!

Piece of aluminum bar, approximately 7 inches long by 1.25 by 3/16s inch, rests under the seat. Pull up seat, insert bar.
The strut came out long ago. I've also wired the seat release in the open position.
Simple. I like simple.

Yep, yep, yep, Columbia. I decided to go with the same solution. No more worries about the seat lift failing... no more worries about being unable to unlock the seat to get at the gas cap; and increased room under the seat to get the nozzle in on the ‘20+ RT.
Simple, and a definite win/win! :2thumbs:

Looks like it's been out a while, but just got an email this morning from Spyder Extras showing a new 2020+ RT seat lift kit. Cost $40. Looks pretty clean. If my Show Chrome HD seat strut doesn't hold up my Russell Day Long seat when it's done, I'll look at this. Don't want to carry around a prop! :)
Link available at Spyder Extras. Might become available for a bit less at Spyder Extra vendors.

Just opened the e-mail 15 minutes ago. Great product, not expensive, well made. Tom :spyder:

Don't want to carry around a prop! :).

The are some pluses to a prop, Troop. It can just be a 5” Allen key out of a set that you carry with you that sits in your glove box. It is very easy to pop in to prop the seat after the first couple of times, and it opens the gap between the filler and the seat quite a bit, making it easier to fill up.

I actually went the whole way and cable tied my seat catch open. Now I never have to worry about my opening mechanism breaking and not letting me fuel up, or buying a new seat lifter. I just open the glove box, get the Allen, lift the seat and prop……… but we all have different drivers:ohyea:

When I sell the Spyder, I’ll replace the Daylong with OEM, put the bolt back in the upper mount of the lifter, and cut the table tie to return it to stock;)

Sure agree with you there Don. I did a nice one hour drive for dealer to determine it was a warranty item, back home and waited for new shock to show up at dealer's, back to dealer's for install, the thing failed in less than two weeks. Lesson learned.

My OEM seat shock wouldn't hold up my seat with a Alaska Leather sheepskin on it. The Show Chrome shock does so without issue. Guessing that a RDL modded seat is a bit heavier and might push the Show Chrome shock to its limit ? Thinking I just may order the SE seat holder and disconnect/zip tie up the seat shock.

I found a replacement shock at McMaster-Carr with much more holding power and staying power than the stock strut. That was back in 2016 and the same strut is still holding my custom Hartco seat with backrest. Look on the body of your strut and there should be a name and a number. Cross reference that in MacMaster-Carr and you should find what you need in several different weights. I don't remember what I bought as that was 8 years ago. There was a discussion back in the day about this, maybe a search.
