2014 RT Defective engine casting

I am currently looking to purchase a very low mileage 2014 RT Ltd, Black Currant color.
Recently, however, I learned from a 'reliable' source that there was a run of 2014 RTs, which had defective engine castings, which would eventually leak oil and require 'Bondo' patching. I understand that these bikes had to be returned to BRP - incidentally, these were of the Black Currant color as well.

Is this a valid report? Steve(of BRP), if you read this post, will you please respond, concerning it's validity? If true, might I then send you the VIN of the RT in question, to determine if its engine was involved?

Thanks, Fritz

I know of one machine this porous casting happened with. Forgot the color.

As for a Bondo patch, that I never heard before. The machine I mentioned above was repaired by engine replacement.

There may have been others, but the problem seemed pretty rare and random.

We have an early 2014 RTS, purchased in January 2014. I have tried to keep aware of known issues since it was the first year for that series.

The known concerns were the ignition switch / key recall by key code number. This involved replacing the ignition switch because the key got stuck. Some engines had a slight oil leak from the oil galley setscrew plug. This was addressed by removing the setscrew, properly cleaning the threads and installing a new setscrew after priming with Loctite and installing wet with a Loctite product. The most concerning issue with a 2014 model is DESS issues.

Outside of that you still contend with known low quality tires which is an issue for all years.

When looking for a 2014 Black RTS, you may find it better to go by the build date if the porous cases are still a concern. Those early machines should have 2013 or very early 2014 dates. The build date is on the sticker, near the drive belt, on the swingarm.

One bike doesn't indicate a pervasive problem...

Maybe I did not convey that, but my thoughts 100%.

No doubt be diligent with good upkeep, but I think a problem of this sort would be well sorted out or exposed on a specific bike by now.

Also, my linking was to show engines had been replaced, not a Bondo patch.

Let's see....

Not to be confused with the run of spyders that had the engine cover bolt that caused some leaks...that was a quick fix. Otherwise have not heard of any casting problems....:dontknow: and this would be the place to hear it....

STEVE - BRP - are you out there? I attempted to send a message to BRPcare, with the VIN number, but got the reply that BRPCARE does not respond to private messages. BRP - I won't proceed with this purchase, unless I receive a definitive answer from you.

The build date on this bike is 4/20/2014. Incidentally, this bike(2335 miles) was bought at auction in Texas, and is now at a dealership(non-CanAm) in Missouri.

I just traded my 2014 RTL Pearl White for a 2016 RTS Special. The Can AM Tech said it was in great shape. I've never had any leaks, never added oil between changes @ about 5000 mile intervals. traded with 21000 miles. Never heard of any issues, other than an initial leak in one set screw.
