2013 BRP adjustable vents

I know the 14 is different but pre models (,10,11,12,13 RT's) are the same I believe, anyway went for a ride today with them in the center position and for the first time since I have owned it. First I ran with them in position 1 and temps were 4 or 5 bars depending on speed. Then I was running @ 55mph with 3 bars after opening them at a stop light. :clap: Granted it was 60 deg but I 've run in cooler temps than that and never saw less than 4 bars. Of course it did not take long at a stop to climb back to 5 bars where it normally runs. I did not see any difference between center and rear position nor did I feel any extra air flow (but I was riding ATGATT) I guess I will have to wait until I start riding with mesh gear on to see. :thumbup: I am expecting cuznjohn to see similar results maybe better with his new set up.

I respectfully disagree as I said I have never seen my bike run at 3 bars on the highway at even lower temperatures. I will repeat this on my 100 mile trip on Thursday 50mi closed & 50mi in center position and report back.

I did not check it but my gas tank lip and cap was cold :yikes: when I filled it up just before coming home and no fumes after parking. I went 123mi and still had 2 bars left. I got distracted by a Harley Rider as I filled up asking about the Spyder I might have made a convert. He is getting old like us and the Harley he and his wife ride is starting to be a little heavy to handle. I did not get the gal amount I filled with because of that. I will take some reading on Thursday it supposed to be 50-55deg for my 200 mi round trip. On the way home I will have the new ECM flash so I am doing checks both ways on temps and gas mileage so I might as well do some Tupperware measurements too.:thumbup:

The vents behind the deflectors are not connected to the tunnel where the radiator air discharges. Unless you have made modifications, such as blocking the right side vents and cutting a hole in the tunnel's inner panel, there is no physical way that the deflectors can affect radiator air flow or the coolant temperature directly. Lots of other possibilities here...gauge problems, wiring/connector resistance, sensor drift, thermostat not closing completely, low ambient temperatures, voltage fluctuation. I still vote circumstantial.

My WAG is the engine was actually running cooler, therefore coolant was too. I know what you are saying and know those body vents have nothing to do with radiator airflow. They do have some effect on engine airflow. I can only report what I observed and that includes the gas cap and tank were cool. Possible water jacket and hoses were cooler too? :dontknow: I will report further Thursday night. How much if any effect they will have in hot temps probably less IMHO. I do know hiding them behind a wall makes them a chimney vent and the adjustables opened up possibilities for venturi effect or in the 3rd position actual pressure into the vents at speed that they never had before. It was 65 at the end of my ride and in 50 deg rides it ran 4+ bars all the time.

We all know how you've made multiple changes to your bike while searching for an answer to the heat problems...:thumbup: :clap:
I also don't think that the air deflector position would affect the temperature of the engine one bit; they are two separate systems that do not connect...
The deflectors MIGHT affect underbody heat since they will affect the airflow by the inlet vents... that's about it... :dontknow:
But I'm pleased as punch, that you're seeing an improvement; WHATEVER the cause!! :2thumbs: nojoke

You can feel the heat pour out on my 2011, so I'm sure it is the same for the 2013. In the reversed position they may try to force air into the vents, but it would be counterproductive. The heat is rising and trying to exit at the vents, while the deflectors try to push it back in. Stick with parallel, unless you are too cold, then set them to normal. It would be interesting to place some thermocouples under the body to test temperatures with the deflectors in the various positions.

Anything that pulls heat out is a good in my mind :thumbup: Truthfully I was surprised at seeing 3 bars as I said I have never seen mine run at that temp before. I am going to do some more measurements on Thursday with 50 deg temps but unfortunately they will consist of exterior Tupperware, gas cap and frame temps both closed and open. I was also surprised at when I took the gas cap off and felt the empty tank it was cool to the touch. Like I said I doubt the effect will be as great in warmer temps.:sour: So you are saying cuznjohn's vents will be counter productive pushing air into the Tupperware ? I am thinking it should be a positive improvement. Any increased airflow seems to me to be a good thing regardless of direction.

the faster you go the cooler it feels. and to add to this post, i did notice with the adjustable vents the bike ran cooler but at slow speeds or a stop it was the same hot bike

I do suspect that the Veritikas vent scoops are more of an aesthetic improvement than a functional one. They may work, but i believe they won't work not as well as they would if they sccoped the air in at a lower location. They almost certainly would work much better if there were exit vents at the rear...that would allow them to funnel the collected heat right out the back. The passenger might object, however. Until someone puts several temp sensors under the skin, and does come controlled testing, all this is just conjecture. It is sound thinking, based on the princlples of physics and aerodynamics, but conjecture nonetheless.

I would think that if you got the air moving rearward; it seemed to me that there were lots of avenues for escape... :thumbup:
But you're correct: lower intakes, would help an awful lot!

UPDATE

Had the ECM update and fuse box fix done at Velocity today.215 mi ride round trip. Ambient(on screen) started out this morning in mid 40's low to mid 50's on the way home. I played with the vents and they did make some difference 1 bar. I actually was running 2 bars at one point. Most of the time at speeds between 50-65mph. Stopped in traffic they climbed to 5 bars. I did some heat measure ments when I filled up a block from my house
Gas Cap 85deg
Tank 90deg
Sides 65deg
Spine 84 deg
Actual temp was 40 deg when I started and 52 on the way home. Average MPG on the way down was 29. On the way home was 30. Not a big difference but maybe it was numbness or wishful thinking but it did seem to run smoother on the was home less floorboard vibration and smoother acceleration.
