2012 RT Limited

So my wife just bought a 2012 RT Limited. It has the trailer hitch already installed. I will be building a small trailer for my wife's power chair. There is a round 9 pin connector in the bottom rear of the left saddle bag that I assume is the connection for the trailer lights. I have been searching for the trailer side connector and have no success in finding one. Anyone have any info on the connector or wire harness?

The nine pin connector is for the RT 622 Can Am trailer. It not only connects the tail, turn and brake lights but also connects to the on board computer to control 'trailer mode' for transmission shifting. There is no other trailer connector on a stock RT Limited.

If you are going to just hook up brake and tail lights to an after market trailer you would probably better off to by pass the factory harness altogether but someone may respond to your question that has managed to figure out the factory wiring.

There are folks in here that have built the flat-4, to the round-9 connectors. If you do some searching for trailer wiring and connectors; they should pop up!
Happy Hunting!

No. Trailer Mode is selected via the menu on the main display and it doesn't care if a trailer is hooked up or not. Try it. On the 2012, only 4 pins of the nine pin connector were used. All of them for lights and ground.

I too have the round connector on our 2014 RT limited but am looking to buy a second trailer that has the flat 4 pin connector. Is there a place I can buy the conversion plug?

I'm a bit surprised that you have a round connector on a 2014. Wasn't that discontinued after model year 2012, with everything after that being the little square 4-pin connector. So, just to clarify, do you think you have an original BRP 9-PIN connector - it's big and ugly and twists to lock both halves together - or perhaps an after market round connector? In addition - the 4-pin BRP connector I'm familiar with is square, not flat. So, would this be a BRP trailer you're looking at or a different one?

You always come through when someone asks a question. It doesn't matter what they are asking about the Spyder but it seems you're always there to help us dumb guys out. I think you should be reconized for what you do on this forum. Thanks Bob:clap::clap:

Round Connector

To the second poster - Nyllajean, does your round connector look like this, or is it something else?

I had the wiring taken off my 12 and put on my 14 because I have a BRP trailer we pull with it. But now I'm buying an additional trailer to leave at our AZ home and it has a 4 flat connector. So I need to leave the ugly round on the bike and try to make a conversion plug if that makes sense.

Thanks!

You can try reversing the BRP adapter they offer to pull BRP trailer behind regular vehicle. But it looks to be for the newer shape. Dont know.

Thanks for humoring me. Now I understand how you ended up with a round connector on a 2014, and yes, what you want to do does make sense. Now, with all due respect to Finless Bob, since you have a 2012 module, only 4 wires were used on the round connector, not 6.

The reference for this comes out of the 2012 trailer manual.

So, back to your original question - I don't know of any dealer or after market plug that will provide a direct conversion from the round connector to a flat 4-pin. And you have two trailers with two different plugs. Maybe you would want to get rid of the round connector on the bike and put on this setup and convert everything to a square 4-pin:

And yes, there's that BRP adapter to allow hooking up a BRP trailer for automotive use, that you might be able to modify. Don't know anything about it though. Perhaps, as long as you have a multimeter and can read out the pins on the flat 4-pin - and as you said, you could probably make up something on your own using NAPA parts.

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking of just rewiring the bike and BRP trailer to the 4 pin plug and be done with it. Thanks very much for your time!

Does the trailer with the 9 pin plug have separate brake and turn signal lights on it? If so, it is a 5 wire system. If you want to change it to 4 wire system you'll have to give up the amber turn signals and use the brake lights as turn signals like your 4 wire trailer is.

If you want to change the wiring on the bike, which make sense, take the Y harness that feeds the module, cut the module off, and use it to feed a new trailer module/isolator. The bike wiring is 5 wire system so to feed a 4 wire trailer you'll need a 5 to 4 wire converter/isolator. DO NOT, under any circumstances, connect the trailer light wiring directly to the bike brake/turn/stop light wiring. The turn signals are fed from the cluster and a short in the trailer wiring could potentially damage your multi-hundred dollar cluster. There are after market isolators available that will do what you need.

Thinking about this the easiest approach, I think, is cut the 9 pin connector off of the older trailer harness. Splice on a flat four connector to it, and a flat four on the trailer side of the harness. Leave the 9 to 4 pin adapter cable permanently plugged into the bike. This will work if, as Snowbelt says, your older trailer is a four wire system as I ask above.
