2012 RT Limited Shutting Down

Bought 2012 RT limited about three weeks ago and it is shutting down after 5 minutes of idle. Dealer can not figure it out and states that bike is showing no codes. BRP tech support contacted, adjusted throttle but still shutting down. Anyone else having this issue? I'm sure it is something simple, but as you can imagine very frustrating.

Very interesting, I just got my new 2011 Rt Limited and it did the same thing to me this afternoon. I was actually waiting for the fan to kick in and as soon as it did, the Spyder shut down totally. I restarted right away without any problem and no codes displayed. Any ideas someone? :(

Welcome to the SpyderHood

Sorry your both having these issues, & I for one am not familiar with this issue. 1st thing I'd look into would be the battery connections. I know many owners in the past have had "odd" issues with no codes & it ended up being loose battery connections. Hope its not serious & someone can get you up & running soon.
Hope its back to being Happy Holidays real soon :joke:

my spyder(2011 RT) has also done this on occasion.I will be watching to see if fellow spyders have a solution! My spyder is doing it's long winter sleep right now.

It sounds like your dealer needs to get on the phone with BRP dealer tech support. They may need the assistance of Kurt or some of the other aces in Wausau to figure this one out. I'm sure they will sort it out for you. I'm always sorry to see a new machine acting up. Keep the faith!

Shut down

Had an HD that would do that on occasion. Sitting at stop light, hitting RR tracks, etc. Finely determined the kill switch was the problem. It was different than the spyder as it was a slider. It would just vibrate to off position. Might want to check that out.

I just ran across this today and wouldn't you know my 2011 RTS did the same thing today. I had it sitting in the garage idling and for no apparent reason when the fans came on it shut down. Started right back up, no codes and ran again this time through the fan coming on. I thought it was odd as it has not done anything like this in the 11k miles I have on it.

X2 (Exactly the same problem) but with my brand new (6 km) 2011 RT Limited. I will advise my dealer but being winter here, I will bring it to him in the Spring if it does it again when I first go out after winter.

I may be worng but...

if left unattended, no break pedal pushed, no throttle given, no clutch pulled in, at all Engine idling stop will in gauge - (The ECU automatically stops the engine after 15 minutes if it is left idling.) Safety feature In case your locked up in a inclosed space that Carbon monoxide poisoning could occur.
my 2010 will shut down if I do nothing but let it idle. My 2009 yamaha raider will do the same thing. and it state this in the yamaha manual, but I dont think its in the spyders maual.

Spyder Shutting down

I called BRP and they told me these Spyders are shipped with a protective coating (chemical) on the inside of the gas tank that take at least 2-3 tankfuls to clear. It seems that when the bike idling, the chemical can't be pushed through the throttle body with enough pressure to keep the engine running and it shuts down. Sounds feasible but I'm still skeptical and was not impressed that the dealership did not know that information. Of course they sell many brands and it would be difficult to know everything about every cycle, but a little more research muscle would had been appreciated. Happened once again to me at a red light this weekend. On my second tank of gas now so I will try BRP's theory. If it doesn't work, I will take it back to the shop for more diagnostics. Luckily this thing is under warranty.

I've had my 2011 RT-S SE since August, have approx 1600 miles, and have experienced the engine dying several times. I was out riding this weekend and was on my way home sitting at a stop light when the engine died, and like everyone else here, started it back up without any problem. I've had my dealer look at it in the past and they too were unable to find any codes, but will call them on Tuesday and let them know it's still occurring.

I will post my results

I will ride another couple of weeks (hard to find the time) and post my results. I also suspect no change, but am willing to try. Really like this bike and hope to get it running right soon.

So far, so good. Running on 2nd tank and it has not shut down on me during idle. I haven't had a chance to get to the third tank as I've been infected with Spyder Mod Fever. Just ordered my running and turning lights along with HMT from Custom Dynamics and the bike spends more time getting modded then ridden. Will stop for now and will see everyone in April at Spyderfest along with my better half, FancyNancy.

Will keep reporting. :)

It could be many things

It happened to me when I first bought mine. With mine it turn out that they had to replace the ignition and security system. It died twice on me for no apparent reason. But like I said it could be many things. Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be.

Spyder shutting Down

My Rt s Limited has done this to me twice. Once after a 20 minute ride idling at a stop light. Once while idling in my driveway after afew minutes. Dealer checked for codes but found none.
