2010 Spyder RS Sputters and Cough's.

Hi Everybody,

I Have searched the internet completely and can not find any answer's on how to get rid of the lower RPM Sputters and Coughs!

I have installed a Kewlmetal Air Cleaner, HMF Exhaust, and a EFI Tuner. I've tried a dozen different settings, yet the cough and sputter's remain.

They aren't real bad, but enough to drive me nuts. They only happen in the Lower RPM range.

Any suggestions or ANY HELP would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

THANKS.

If you keep doing things that lean out the mixture more and more, the problem will continue to get worse. You need to pick performance accessories logically and carefully. Check your plugs, I'll bet they show lean, lean, lean! If not, then you probably have tuned too far the other way. In either case, the plugs will tell the tale. I'd also take a look at your plug wires and for a vacuum leak.

Y

There is possibility that you Y gaskets turned into dust but list of reasons is kinda long. I would suggest to go back to factory set up maybe except muffler, check/replace Y gaskets and take it from there, step by step, many guys cured this with O2 sensor. Just be very careful when checking plugs and wires in case they are good you don't want to damage them which is easy done when you force it.
Whatever it is post it in here so other guys will know in the future.

I agree, He is running too lean. !!

Hey, Thanks for the reply's so far.

The EFI tuner is a HMF Optimizer, I believe its made by Dobeck. I did find one setting where I almost eliminated the sputter ( The settings I believe were too rich ), and the performance suffered considerably. I'd hate to give up the performance just to eliminate the sputters. Perhaps I just haven't hit the magic combination of settings yet.

The sputters and coughs occur at at easy take off from a stop and when riding at in town speeds. 30 to 45 mph. Backfire's through the exhaust on off throttle deceleration are minimal. Which leads me to believe I'm not running too lean. Sputters occur when riding solo or with my lady on the back. No change.

I'll disconnect the battery tomorrow in an effort to reset the computer and see if there is any improvement. The bike pulls strong through the gears, definitively an increase in performance with my mod's, from stock. I have NO Complaints about the power the 990 provides. In fact I was quite surprised at the acceleration.

I've read all I can find in the forums about the sputter problem. It seems there are many suggestions, but no one has posted a cure. I purchased the bike with only 275 miles on it. I know the previous owner didn't return it to the dealer for any reason. He barley rode it! 275 miles in a year! I did the oil change at 600 miles. I am a pretty fair mechanic and have owed and serviced over a dozen motorcycles over the years. This sputter thing has me stumped. I have no exhaust leaks, but I haven't checked the plugs or wire's yet. I assumed they couldn't be bad already with only 920 miles on the bike.

There really is no other symptoms or problems other than the occasional sputter and cough. I'm not sure of the software updates and if the 2010 model year needed any.

I've only owned the bike for a couple of month's so I'm sure there is a lot yet to learn about this machine. I've already done most of the comfort mods, Corbin Seat, Billet Risers, Madstad Windshield, Can-Am back rest and a personally designed Graphics kit. More to come, I'm sure.

In the meantime, my priority is to get the bike running properly. Hopefully with other Spyder owners help, I'll accomplish that. Here is a couple of pic's of my ride.

Great paint (or wrap) job. I like it!

Not familiar with that tuner. Can you tune differerent parts of the power band / throttle input separately or is it a one position covers all type unit?

Be sure you're not lugging the engine. I doubt that you are but some do and that can give you similar symptoms.

And I agree, your plugs and wires should not be an issue with less than 1,000 miles.

BajaRon,

Thanks for the compliment on my Wrap Graphics. I am a Musician and have been playing keyboards for over 40 years. I finally combined my two passions, Music & Motorcycles. :) Peter, the owner of www.Jetskidetailing.com / www.AllPowerSportsGraphics.com did the design for me and provided me with the kit. This guy is awesome and I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in a Graphics kit!

The EFI tuner has three separate tuning adjustments. One for quarter throttle, one for Medium throttle and one for full throttle. The first setting I understand is where most of the average riding RPM range occurs. As you move the setting adjustments up from 1 to 7 the amount of fuel is supposed to be increased. I currently have it set one 1.5. I've tried as high as 6, however she gag's off the line and the acceleration performance suffers. Too much fuel, I assume.

The sputters and coughs are NOT excessive, however I feel with such a nice powerhouse motor she shouldn't be running with any coughing.

I may be lugging the engine a little. I still have to get accustomed to the different shift points and the best RPM range and what gear to be in at slower riding speeds. However any lugging I'm doing is minimal and I don't feel is the cause of the coughs.

By the way, the sputters and coughs were there before I did any Mods. The performance Mod's I did were basically the same I've done with all my previous bikes. My Old School thoughts were.....More Air going in, Adjustments to Air/Fuel ratio and more exhaust going out, the better the motor should perform. Which I have accomplished. She certainly runs stronger now than before the Mod's.

I'll continue to try different adjustments, and hope more suggestions are posted here.

The EFI tuner has a connection to the 02 Sensor and is supposed to optimize that also.

Should I disconnect that and replace it with Ken's 02 modifier?

I willing to try anything, however I've read good and bad about the 02 Modifier. Like I said in my first post, too many mixed opinions posted with no definite cure. :(

HDXBONES,

Thank you for your Info!

That is the first I've heard about factory LEAN at low and cruise RPM's and enough fuel at the higher RPM Range.

I'll concentrate my Tuner adjustments within the first mode of the tuner.

Good advice on the other area's you touched on also!

I see you are a former Spyder owner and currently a Harley owner.

I am the opposite, I bought a new Heritage Classic in 2004 and had the Service tech's build me a 103 beta stroker for it. I chromed it out and it really was an Beautiful bike. I put only 3,200 miles on it in 7 years. Spent more time detailing it than riding it.

I sold it and bought my Spyder. I was looking for a new & different riding thrill and I'm very happy with choosing the Spyder. It really is a unique FUN ride. I am approaching age 60 and am a featherweight. The Heritage was just a little too heavy for me especially with a passenger. I owned a 1200 Sporty prior to the Heritage and really should have kept it.

I feel the Spyder provides more riding safety especially here in SW Florida. Lot's of seniors on the road and if they can't see the Spyder coming they really should not be driving.

Let me know your thoughts about the Spyder and why you gave it up. Just curious.
Thanks.
Jim
