• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. 2010 RTS SE5 Shifting Problem

I left the house this morning at 5:15 to head to work. The ride was great until I tried to down shift from 5th to 4th. The spyder would not down shift. I tried several times but no go. I was able to turn around and get it back to the house. I did not have time to investigate, had to turn around and head to work. Any ideas what to check tomorrow? Has anyone had the same trouble and could you give me some advise. Also when I slowed down to and stopped the spyder did not down shift automaticlly.

Thanks
James

Could be many things, like your shift lever going out or GPS (Gear Position Sensor) but with our 2010 SE5 we'd run into similar issues if the oil was low as the Spyder uses the engine oil for the SE5 transmission as well. Worth a check, tho to properly check it, you should have the engine at FULL OPERATING TEMPERATURE, not just sitting and running for a few minutes. Good luck & I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members will chime in shortly. Let us know what you find

:agree:
My two prime locations for looking were also the GPS, and the oil level...
Let us know what turns up, and good luck!

Thanks for the info. Thought about the oil but did not have time this morning. I will try to look at in the morning. I did not have any warning indicators of low oil on the display but I will start there first.

Another possibility is the shift linkage pin. Mine became disconnected last summer and the tranny would not shift out of second.

Just wondering... Could the problem with yours have started when you took the drive belt out in the driveway incident? :dontknow:

"Low Oil" on the display is low oil pressure, not low oil volume. It indicates a serious engine condition unless it is a bad sensor. Yoyu need to learn to check the oil at the dipstick, following the proper procedure, which is in your manual. nojoke

Bob D. The belt incident happened on the first ride attempt of the year (around April 20th). The shift linkage thing happend late in September--about 15,000 miles later.

:agree: This happened to me also, I have a 2010, cost about $100-125 to have fixed, but was covered under my extended warranty .

:opps: I was just wondering if there could have been a connection between the two... ;)

I wasn't aware of the time and mileage that passed between them...

Ok here we go. Finaly got time to look at the bike. Jacked it up and reached up under it and found the linkage hanging. The splined yolk, not sure what it is called, that slides over the splined shaft that comes out of the transmission was hanging down. I was able to put it back on and shift the bike to neutral. I think there is a nylon nut or something that is missing. Maybe something to keep the yolk from coming off. The set screw that goes through the yolk was tight. I am going to look at the manual and I am sure that I will be able to get the parts I need. It was a great comfort to be able to come to this site and know that there is a vast amount of knowledge out there to help me. Went for a short ride and the bike worked fine. Oil level was right on. Looking forward to spyderfest and meeting some great people.

Thanks again.

Curious question. How many miles on your spyder? Has it been serviced solely by the dealer, yourself, or a combination of? The reason I ask is because if your mileage is relatively low it would appear to be something missed, or not checked at all, during setup. Again, just curious.

When on the road I believe there is a procedure (in the manual) and a wrench in the BRP tool kit that you could manually shift the transmission either into neutral or a lower gear to get you to safety or home. Now in your case when you would have gone to manually shift it you would have seen the linkage off and made your day a little better. But also if the linkage was not off and it just had a brain fart and did not shift down, then by putting it in neutral and trying to shift up and down it may have worked afterwards. Hope yours was as simple as it now appears. Bob

I have almost 22,000 miles on my spyder. I do most of the service myself.

On a positive note...
The source of the problem has been found, a solution in at hand, and lessons have been learned! :2thumbs:
