• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

2008 Electrical Blackout

Went for a ride the other day and turned off the Spyder to open the garage door. When I turned the key and pressed the starter button, the instrument cluster went blank and nothing would work except my GPS (direct connection to the battery) what should I check first?

Check battery cables for corrosion, could be loose cable as well. Ive had to replace my battery about every 24 months - they go bad quick so your battery could have shorted out.

Agreed - time to replace if all connections are checked and solid

2-3 years seems to be about average life span for Spyder batteries and with you running an RS with extra load being taken by the GPS with direct connection, its probably time to replace it. As the other poster said, double check all your battery connections to make sure they are clean and tight. I know on our 2011 RT-S we had a loose ground strap (not terminal connection) at this years SpyderFest that left us stranded in the rain after Teddy was the Ring Bearer at the wedding :banghead::banghead::banghead: Wasn't too happy about that  Double check everything and if all seems good, I'd suggest its time for replacement.

You could always put it on a charger and see if it will charge back up, but it would be hard to keep faith it wouldn't leave you stranded sometime :sour:

Good Luck & let us know how things progress ;)

If you recently replaced the battery, it is very likely that there is a problem at the battery connections as others have mentioned. I would suggest checking the battery terminals for tightness or possible corrosion.

Look for loose connections at the battery, or a loose rear frame ground (negative jump start terminal under the seat). Test the charging system to see it is putting out sufficient power to charge the battery properly. If nothing else is found, check the battery to see that it takes a charge, holds a charge, and will sustain a load. If the battery tests OK but will not retain voltage when connected (retains it OK when disconnected), look for a parasitic load with the ignition turned off. Batteries do fail in a short time occasionally, but it is more often another problem.
