A friend at work asked if I know a good independent shop to service his H-D. I asked why? as I know he gets all his work done at the local dealer, and I know he has the dealer do all the service even oil changes. He tells me the H-D dealer won't do any service work on his H-D because it is more than ten years old! Not sure if this is a common practice no matter the marque. We suspect this may be dealers ploy to sell new bikes. Is this a practice in other parts of the country, no matter the brand? Just looking for some feedback to see if this is becoming a common trend.

There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Yes, it's SOP for HD. Never had that problem with Honda's though.
I bought a bunch of old iron head Harley's as a project a few years ago, and went to the shop to have the jugs honed and order new piston kits. "Sorry, we don't touch those anymore - no, we have no idea where you can take them."
Makes for great opportunities for the small shops around the area. I found a three man shop that specialized in iron heads, and they did a super job for me - and at a very reasonable cost.

A Harley thing if true. Maybe not all dealers but harley has been around a long time and it's hard to believe they would leave you hanging. I have worked with all the other brands asian, english and even european and never found this. I even repaired a Suzuki "Kick and go"...look that one up..:yikes:

Try getting a Honda dealer to do a carb rebuild or clutch on a late 70s early 80s goldwing.....[emoji57]
But yea, seems like dealers are becoming less and less knowledgeable about the aging models, and their willingness to work on them.
Seems the SOP for owning an older bike is either knowing how to do the work yourself or knowing a good indie mechanic.

I have heard the same in our area. No work on older HD's for sure. There are a lot of older HD's around here, so someone other than the dealer is working on them.
I would not be surprised if the Honda dealer did the same here. They will not work on trike conversions, period.

A lot of dealers, HD and Honda will not work on older bikes for two reasons, one nobody there is old enought to know how and the other is a person brings a older bike in and when they find out how it costs, they walk off and leave the bike. Then the dealer is stuck storing forever.
Problem has been around since the 50's that I know off. We used to play with them on the beach and if they went in the gulf of Mexico (Eglin AFB, FL) just pull it out and scrap the thing. Today, somebody could back in 10 years and want their classic back.
A lot of Honda dealers will not work on any part of a trike or in some case, if you have a trailer hitch. The factory will/has backed them up. heardall kinds of reasons

My buddy who is a auto mechanic says the flat rate book adds 25% more hours to the labor charge if a car is over 10 just for the extra work due to rust and work done by others and the extra hassle to get parts

Another feather in old Harleys cap, not only are they overpriced and break down constantly but once it hits 10 years they wont touch it anymore???? Probably because they know the POS will break down again too fast lol. However i will say servicing a 70s bike vs a 10 year old harley (2005 model) is a big difference. I had an 05 suzuki boulevard and no problem getting that worked on.
