• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

SO, I thought I'd give you guys an update on the electronic mystery. I trailered the Spyder to the dealer so the tech could experience the magic for himself without having to wait for the safety message to reset. I rolled the Spyder off the trailer and it started correctly for the first time in...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Yeah, the tech said there's really not a way to reflash. Hope he's mistaken and it's just a procedure they haven't had to do yet. I'd hate to guess at the cost of a new ECU...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

I spoke to the tech at the dealer, a good guy with several years experience. He's never encountered a Spyder doing what mine is doing. I'll take it to them next week. He'll contact BRP for advice before proceeding. Basically my current starting procedure is clear safety message, cycle display...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Good tip. I might even call BRP tech myself just to get an idea.

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

The plot thickens. I've got the trike running, but in an odd fashion. I went through the code reading procedure found in the shop manual involving setting the display in Hr mode, then depressing both headlight override and M button , holding them down, and pressing hi-beam flasher 5 times. No...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Stored in a very tight temperature controlled garage. Never seen any evidence of rodents in the bike shop. No mouse nests, etc in the machine. Tested the Kill switch. Appears to function normally, that is, fuel pump runs during starting attempts with switch "on", does not run with switch "off."...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Thanks for all suggestions. I double checked fuse #5 in the front fuse box. It's fine. I suspected so, as the same fuse runs the fuel pump, which is running just fine. I replaced the starting solenoid today, as well as the battery, even though all battery voltages measured fine. No joy yet...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Voltage was checked at battery terminals during starting attempts. Never dropped below 12.2V. Positive and negative connections at solenoid and at ground post are clean and tight. Starter switch is good as fuel pump cycles every time it is pushed. I wondered if the solenoid plunger is...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Finally got around to checking cables. Everything clean and tight on the battery. Also the 4 leads on the starting solenoid (?) (small silver cannister with 2 heavy leads and two light weight leads bolted to left side of frame ahead of battery under seat?) are bright and tight. I actually...

HELP! 2008 GS SM5 Starter not turning over despite excellent battery voltage

Went to start the Spyder after a lengthy period of inactivity. Only 8K miles on this machine. Never a lick of trouble with this machine. Always on Battery Tender, fresh fuel, checked voltage (12.8), etc. Key on, fuel pump cycles, safety message displays. Push M button on dash, hit starter. **...

    Not sure what caused this....

No serious answer to my serious question below due to pissing contest above derailing thread. There were incidents a couple years ago that were thought to be related to fuel accumulation in the charcoal canister. Is that still thought to be a concern, (whether it was the cause in this...

    Not sure what caused this....

I've been off the forum for quite a while. Previous discussions on this topic centered on over-fueling and getting raw fuel into the evap canister as the primary inciting cause. With those discussions in mind, as well as a tendency to not let bureaucracy push me into stupid choices, I removed...

Spyder featured in new music video!!

The internet provides aspiring filmmakers many avenues to display their talents that were not available a generation ago. One way is music video production, with hosting on various music websites. My son Matt is one of these young filmmakers. This January, he and a buddy conceived, produced...

IS YOUR SPYDER YOUR ONLY TRANSPORTATION?

My SM-5 is pretty much a novelty ride. I have a bunch of Moto Guzzi motorcycles that I enjoy, and am active in MGNOC. Still most commuting is done in a cage, except when weather permits. And here in Central PA, weather hasn't been too permissive lately... We've gotten 34" snow in the last...

    A Honda Rune anyone?

I'm sure the Runes are mechanically excellent. But the looks were so far out that they were pretty much a "love it or hate it" appearance. And, unfortunately for Honda, most people were in the latter category. (me too) Their DN-01 is destined for the same fate, I'm afraid. It's a shame...

    Awesome sidecars

Here's a warning for those seriously considering a sidecar rig: the Ural sidecars are very well made, but the motorcycles are quite "iffy" as far as the dependability department. If you want a hack, stick one on a Moto Guzzi or BMW. You really can't run a Ural at highway speeds, the 62 MPH...

    BUELL closing ???

Hey, I'm a Moto Guzzi nut. Our slogan is: "Moto Guzzi--going out of business since 1921!" 1% US market share would be a step UP for us!! But the bikes (and the Guzzi folks) are great! Just the best kept secret in motorcycling...

tried to steel a spyder - then burned out ??

Hope it wasn't that someone drove the Spyder home 15 min before and parked it in the garage...:(

    Garmin GPS crashed

Moisture removal: Put it in a sealed ziplock bag of uncooked rice for a couple days. Do this after removing battery and memory card and drying/cleaning terminals. Should pull any residual moisture out of the unit. A sandwich bag rubberbanded around the unit will work when riding in light...

    Spyder Apparel

There's already a company that makes ski clothing(?) that has the logo "Spyder", so as long as you don't put "Can-Am" with it, I can't see how they could harass you. And if your own photo or embroidery of a Spyder was incorporated, it wouldn't be a copyrighted image.
