• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

My Spyder wish list - what's yours?

My fantasy is a one side swing arm with the shaft and the brake mounted on the same side. Imagine removing the lug nuts and taking the wheel off -- nothing like the current nightmare. It could even have a hinged rear fender so the wheel could be rolled out. On my fourth rear tire and tire...

My Spyder wish list - what's yours?

Shaft Drive. Gravel roads and chip seal are in abundance around here. We have two seasons: Winter with cinder covered roads; Summer with full time chip sealing.

Rear Tire Pressure - General Altimax RT43

I was running 16-17 in my fronts, which seemed to work well for my also 'non aggressive' riding style. Then I had an experience that demonstrated there's not always a choice how hard you wrench on the bars. A mid-curve 6-8" rock (new in the last 20 minutes) made me abruptly change my line...

Rear Tire Pressure - General Altimax RT43

If you run the pressure formula on the front tires, you'll discover the fronts need more pressure than the rear. They have more weight on them and a lower load rating because of the smaller tire cross section. I've also discovered the fronts can 'tuck under' in an emergency maneuver (rock...

Rear Tire Pressure - General Altimax RT43

By the numbers... Take the tires max load and divide that by the max inflation pressure (all on the tires side wall). That will tell you how many pounds of load each psi of tire pressure will carry. Divide the weight actually on the rear tire (fully loaded with you gear and fuel) by that...

    Cat Delete Pipe Recommendations?

Where I live the roadsides are frequently covered with grass - dry grass at this time of year. That was a consideration when I removed my cat, since I do occasionally have to pull off the pavement. Besides the reduction in perceived heat for the riders, reducing the chance of starting a fire...

Tires - what speed rating, H or T?

I always thought the speed rating was about carcass integrity and it's ability to maintain shape at higher RPM. When a tire 'balloons' at speed (like a Kenda) it not only causes uneven wear, but greatly compromises performance. Since higher speed rated tires are stiffer, ride quality can...

Will a Cat delete pipe help remove heat from the Spyder?

Give RLS a call -- he'll answer any question you can think of asking. Honest, good people. Mine is installed with the honeycomb baffle. Barely increases the sound -- more of a change in the character of the sound. The python bulge is a resonator of sorts to keep the sound under control...

What is the Secret to tightening the Axle Nut after Belt Adjustment?

If you ever wonder why oil drain plugs get stripped by over-tightening with a torque wrench look at this site: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/torque-lubrication-effects-d_1693.html When you drain the oil you lubricate the threads. Same thing for the axle torque if you use anti-seize on the...

What is the Secret to tightening the Axle Nut after Belt Adjustment?

My belt changes tension and alignment going from breaker-bar tight to torqued. The swing arm opening is significantly wider with no tension than it is when torqued. Good thing; I'd never be able to get the wheel back in if it were smaller. I've just learned the fudge factors required to come...

Oops, hooked up battery backwards! Anyone done this?

Fuses typically blow in 100's of milliseconds which isn't fast enough to protect modern electronic devices. In the last half century EE designers have learned to put a device, typically a diode, in the path to block reverse current and sometimes a second device to short circuit the...

More tire pressure stuff - a method for calculating tire pressure?!

I found (and subsequently lost) a very detailed webpage dedicated to setting initial tire pressures based on the manufacturer's rating and the actual load on the tire. It caught my attention because it confirmed and validated what Peter and Mike have been recommending for tire pressures. A...

Oh my... lower psi in car tires on Spyder's really works!

    Using the 'load and load rating' method I arrived at somewhat different pressures. Rear with a Yoko 92H (1400# rating @51psi) and 450# load (road scale) calculates to ~16psi. 1400 / 51 = 27.45 #load per psi. 450# / 27.45 = 16.39psi. Front Vredstein 980# rating @51#, 375# load (750# on...

2016 RT - any suggestions for a longer lasting rear tire? estimated mileage?

I noticed early on that the the tire felt 'squishey' when braking or accelerating in a corner. Either action tightened the cornering line and I thought it was the tire deforming and causing some oversteer. In response to that, I raised the pressure to 24psi. I think that contributed to the...

2016 RT - any suggestions for a longer lasting rear tire? estimated mileage?

It's a Yokohama Avid Ascend GT 205/65R15. The three inner rows of tread are just slightly off center, but the tire is marked 'inside' and 'outside'. It's going on a 2020RT (not RTL). This is tire #4 on the rear -- I'm beginning to feel like a tire tester. The quick wear may have something...
