• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Live free and die: Michigan's motorcycle helmet law four years later

I beg to differ. See my post above regarding the insurance premium increase in Michigan after the repeal of helmet law. I personally suffered the premium increase even though I always rode with a helmet on my head - this argument does hold water.

Live free and die: Michigan's motorcycle helmet law four years later

Another point to consider in the helmet freedom of choice debate is litigation. Let's say that a rider is out without a helmet. Through no fault of his own, a careless driver hits him and he suffers a serious head injury resulting in permanent disability. Guess what - the insurance company will...

Live free and die: Michigan's motorcycle helmet law four years later

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. My wife and I lived in Michigan when the helmet law was repealed. We always wore helmets as we toured on our BMWs. Our premiums increased as soon as the helmet law was repealed - the fact the we wore helmets didn't come into play. Increased costs across...

    Low Fuel Icon On Dash

I'm guessing he's referring to 98 octane - research octane number (RON) - not the method used in the USA of (RON+MON)/2. Research octane number is always higher than motor octane number (MON).

Is it an RS or a GS

I have a 2009 and I'm confused - is it officially an RS or a GS? I thought the GS designation was only used in 2008, but maybe I'm wrong. My registration shows it as an RS based on VIN, but I often see posts here calling 2009s a GS.

    Kumho Ecsta AST Tire Question

+1 for Kumho on the Spyder. I have Kumho Solus 175/65R14 on front and the Kumho Ecsta 225/55R15 on the rear. Whoever said the Ecsta was being discontinued in an older post was incorrect. The DOT code shows my Kumho Ecsta was made late in 2015. I have no complaints about handling or traction with...

    2008 GS oil pressure switch

Check on the right side of the engine on the lower part of the clutch housing to the rear of the radiator hose. You'll have to remove the lower body panel.

    Thanks BajaRon

I received a set of MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor spark plug wires and NGK iridium plugs from BajaRon today. Nicely packaged with clear instructions and even included packets of dielectric grease and heat sink paste. Great ignition wire set - Thanks BajaRon - my Spyder has never run this smooth.

    Misfire Mystery

In my original post I mentioned that I have an RS - I accidentally posted this in the wrong place. I thought I should close out the topic now that I have completed the repair. I received the MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor wire set from BajaRon today. I also got a pair of NGK iridium plugs from him...

    Misfire Mystery

Today I pulled the tupperware and removed the airbox. With the airbox off, I checked all the vacuum hoses again. I checked the plug wires for tightness and any sign of arcing. I started the engine and checked the operation of the IACV. Everything seemed okay. I let it run and warm up - it never...

    Misfire Mystery

I checked the vacuum hoses today. All look good and I sprayed some carb cleaner on them with the engine running to see if it would get sucked in - nothing doing. In my experience ignition breakdown is more likely under load, not at idle and clearing up under load, so I'm not inclined to replace...

    Misfire Mystery

My 2009 RS has developed a problem that has me scratching my head. I'm technically savvy - I spent my entire career in technical service and quality for a major European auto manufacturer and I maintained ASE Master Certification. Here's what's happening: On start-up the engine runs fine. Once...

    Parking Brake Adjustment

I used the method shown in the first video. My parking brake works perfectly now! It was hard to set before - it would allow wheel slippage and it was hard to release. Now it sets with a few clicks and holds and release is easy. Thanks Jerry.

    Wheel bearings

I'm not sure the grade of the bolt is the issue. Looking at the exploded drawing in the service manual, the spacer seems to be the culprit. Unless the spacer ID and the bolt OD are a tight - near interference - fit, I think the spacer is what takes the load. If the spacer is just mild steel...

    Question on clunk of transmission

:agree: If you understand how a motorcycle transmission with sliding gears and dog/slot engagement works, the clunk makes sense. There's no load on the dogs as they clunk into place in the slots, no damage is happening. The clunk is merely the inertia of the spinning gears being stopped as the...

    Another Tire Question

I'm very happy with the Kumho Solus tires. The fit works on our 2009 RS. My wife remarked about how good they felt after she took a 40 mile ride yesterday.

    TIRES ????????

Flame on. For me it's not about pinching pennies - it's all about performance. #1 - motorcycle tires aren't necessarily softer compounds - they're available in a number of different compounds. #2 - harder compounds don't lead to hydroplaning. That's a function of tread design - rain channels and...
