• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

GPS replaced, few questions

After reading the various threads on problems caused by / related to the Gear Position Sensor I called my closest dealer and convinced them to contact BRP to bring in the new sensor before I brought my Spyder in. I had had several episodes of high idle, for no apparant reason, and also had a few 'thrilling' power steeing burps, where it felt as though it locked up. The service mgr agreed as did BRP, I waited about a week for the part to arrive, but then decided I was as skilled as the dealers' guys to replace it. So I rode over yesterday and paid them about $100 for the part. Had I let them replace it it would have been covered by warranty, of course. I suppose I don't trust them working on my bike.

It took only about 90 minutes this morning to strip off the body panels, disconnect the battery, loosen the drive belt and remove the front drive pulley. Swapped the new sensor easily and reassembled everything. Before I finished I turned on the ignition to be sure the gears were being displayed correctly.

Two questions:

1. Although I disconnected the battery for at least an hour, the time on the display was still correct when I reconnected it. How could that be? I had disconnected both + and - leads.

2. I was careful to note that the new sensor was #420266166, on the bag and marked on the sensor itself. WHY would the old part also be marked (molded in) with the same 166, not the orig #165? Note that my Spyder is #445, delivered in Dec 08, certainly one of the original lot with respect to this sensor. Both the original and the new one are marked 'Made in UK' but the plastic bag says Made in China. Which is it?

I let the machine idle for 15 minutes after reconnecting the battery as I recently changed to a Leo Vince muffler. Took it around the block a few times to recheck the belt tension, and settled with it at about 820 as measured by my sonic meter (yes the expensive one).

I can't answer any of your questsions as i let the dealer handle the replacements but i did want to mention if this was done on an SE5 there is also a budds update as well.....

What is a "budds" update? I am having my sensor replaced on my '08 SE5 as I type. I want to make sure the Budd has been updated too if it needs to be.

Bill

The new (166) sensors were placed into production some time in the fall of 2008... last year. So your delivery date may coincide with the fall manufacture.

Budds is the diag/update tool if your taking it to the dealer they should do the firmware update when its in for service.

Good info for those SE5 owners who are contemplating this but Stuart's is a Premier Edition so its not an SE5.

Thanks ZZNEONZZ,
I will be sure to ask when I pick it up. The Service Manager was impressed that I was aware or the Grounding update notice for RFI. I think she knows that we are at least "somewhat informed". I have to admit that I have been very happy with the service up here at SnowCity. :2thumbs:

Did you disconnect the battery right on the actual battery? or just those connectors under the seat?

Sounds like your Spyder had the right GPS sensor to begin with. I don't understand why you had to pay $100 for the part if it's covered under warranty???? That is nuts. So BRP would rather have to pay for the part AND the tech to install it?

Mine was replaced by the tech--- took him 30 minutes. No charge.

I disconnected the leads from the battery itself, so there's no way anything was powered. How could the clock have kept time??

I had no doubt that I would pay for the part. Warranty work can only be performed by a dealer, so it would be impossible to receive a replacement part under warranty unless the dealer installs it (and returns the defective part to the mfr).

Did they do the grounding update on your spyder? Warranty? I called my service manger early in the week and he had not heard of it. I told him where to look and then went by yesterday and he said he checked with BRP and they told him if I hadn't had a problem then he couldn't do the update under warranty. I also mention the creeping in the phone call(I have an SE) and he said BRP answer was to blip the throttle. I am losing confidence in the dealer. :gaah:
