HOLY COW! Check out what happened to me today!

If you have Tri-Axis handlebars better check this from time to time!

Good warning! Your video highlighted the problem very well! It made me NOT want a tri-axis, lol!

Awe come on... Just because that happened it's not like it makes them a problem or not worth having!

No way now that I have these would I ever have another Spyder without them! My comfort level improved greatly with them.

Bob

Thanks for the warning, I just checked mine and they are still tight with over 10,000 miles of riding.

Yikes..!!

that can un-nerve anyone...:yikes: was there any mention of loctite or lock washers..?? Knowing you and your work this is odd...glad your safe of the freeway HOV lane...

Happens

If I had a nickel for all the bits that vibrated loose/moved/ fell off/disappeared in 40+ years of riding, I would have a LOT of nickels! Tclocs....pre-ride inspection. Every ride, or, you get unexpected surprises! Normally unpleasant, sometimes terrifying, always interesting! Me, I like boring. Stuff that works.......

My point exactly! Add a check of these to a pre-ride inspection!

So another good point.... WHO does a real pre-ride inspection?
Like a pilot with an airplane who may not even be mechanically inclined......

I do before every ride! You do not have to be a mechanic to do basic checks!

I bet hardly anyone does a real pre-ride inspection?

Hey Bob...
I know that it's the insurance guy in me that's bubbling to the surface ...

But in traffic like that; shouldn't your attention have been on the vehicles around you?

(Sorry!)

I'd have just locked the bolts down in the parking lot, and made the video in a safer location...

(Again; Sorry! I may just be over-reacting to traffic densities that I'm just not used-to...)

I rode my tri axis handle bars on my 2012 for over 40,000 miles without any incident or loosening whatsoever

Did you torque them to spec or just tighten them down with a allen wrench? Checking them is a good idea but torquing them to spec might have prevented this in the first place.

I only went on a few rides with my new Tri-axis bars installed and my bolts/screws are tight. Thanks for the heads up Bob

OK folks. No need to panic. :yikes: It's not like we are riding a "paint shaker", aka HD. Just check them from time to time. Tom :spyder:

I'm guilty ...

I agree with you bob, I for one am guilty of not performing a pre ride inspection other than check oil, tire pressure, visual inspection on lights belt & indicators before riding.

OK so answers

factory ones come with Loctite i would all ways use blue Loctite

Those 2 bolts do not have locktite on them because they are what you loosen to adjust the angle. They are the tri-axis handlebars and that is what they do! Adjust the angle best for you. Normally you would not have locktite on adjustment screws.

cuznjohn
can you use lock tight on the bolts

However with that said, once you find the position you like, as I said in the video, I then could put locktite on them.
Only worry is I do not remember if you can actually remove those without a nut or something falling inside.

Bob, locked the bots in the parking lot?
When I left the parking lot they were not loose!!!! They became loose while riding. That is the point of the video I shot.
Do a pre-ride check of these before taking off so you don't get that surprise on the road. This is what happened to me.
As for shooting the video, it was not planned in any way. I ride on the freeways with my camera on 100% of the time. So what you saw was not scripted or planned but happened to me LIVE!!!

These are the tri-axis handle bars. There is no "torgue spec" for these two bolts!!! They kit comes with a allen wrench "tool" to allow you to loosen those and adjust the angle of the bars. Then with the tool, you tighten them back up. As I said in the video, using the tool I tighten them up as best I could. But in about 3-4K miles they came loose on the road.

I rode my tri axis handle bars on my 2012 for over 40,000 miles without any incident or loosening whatsoever

Well that's great but as you see mine did. So all I am saying is since mine did people should check these from time to time.

You do know your stock bars are held on with the same type bolts?

JC, no they are not the same bolts! And based on removing the stock ones to install the tri-axis handlebars. BRP yellow locktited them to death. I had a heel of a time breaking loose the stock handlebar bolts. I doubt very seriously the stock 4 bolts on the stock handlebars would ever come loose.

Also, before the safety Nazi's jump in... :banghead:

Please watch the entire video.... I do show that in fact with these loose you do not have a problem controlling the spyder. The design of these is such that the two sides are geared and interlinked. I shows this near the end of the video. It is just a little freaky to be able to move them when riding. That is all....

So the good thing is if these do come loose on you, you wont DIE and you have no issue maintaining control. So BRP designed these right for sure.

Bob

No problem with controlling the Spyder:yikes::yikes:. I would of pulled my ass over somewhere safe and tightened those up immediately. It freaked me out just watching the video with you in traffic.
