Hi All,

I am a new Spyder owner. Just picked it up yesterday. Pretty 2011 RT-S SE5.

Question for you all. We were told by the previous owner that when we go to put the parking brake on/off we should have our foot of the regular brake. The manual doesn't mention that so I am curious as to if that is truly the case. Would think if you ware any type of incline once you take the parking brake off the bike would start to roll and not in the way you want to.

If anyone has any info on this for me I would really appreciate it!

Welcome to the spyder world and this great site..congrats on the new ryde..!! :2thumbs: no you do not, the park brake is motor driven. Just make sure it is adjusted properly.....enjoy :thumbup:

Cool. I wondered but the gentleman we got it from was adamant to take foot off the brake. Something about bending splines or something. Not sure exactly.

The bike is actually for my wife. She can't do a standard 2 wheeler so this will get her in the wind with me more! Looking forward to many miles of enjoyment out of this.

:congrats: on your new :spyder2:. We are going on our fourth riding season with our 2011 SE5 and like it as much as when we first purchased it.

We always have foot on the regular brake when releasing or engaging the parking brake. Just like in a car with auto tranny.

Thanks that makes total sense to me. But he said something about bending a spline or pin or something by doing it. Don't quite understand that all but I just worry more about the bike rolling before I can get the brake on/off with out having my foot on the regular brake! :spyder:

Not sure if the spline/pin issue has come up requiring a foot off brake method. A few have experienced the cable coming off the roller mechanism--supposedly an easier repair if it happens.

No brake cable issues with e-brake on any of my RT's.

So I think I figured out what the deal was with the brake from the previous owner.

After work I was checking things out figuring out how to work it all and thought I would just try it. So put my foot on the brake and pressed the parking brake button. I notices that the brake pedal raised about 3/4" or so. So I hit it again to take it off and the pedal went down.

So what I am guessing what they did was press hard on the brake pedal too hard and not let it raise like it needed to causing the pin to bend. So hopefully if we just be careful and not force the brake when we engage the parking brake it should be all good!! I am hoping we are all set!!

Sorry guys.... I have a 2011 RTS and if I hold my foot on the brake peddle and hit the parking break switch, if I do not lift my foot as I feel the break peddle come up, I will get a parking brake failure warning! If you hold down against the peddle coming up, it will stall the motor and cause a fault. Trust me... been there done that!

So to the OP, If you sit on your Spyder and apply the brake, then hit the parking brake switch, you will feel the peddle push back on your foot. As you feel this let up on the peddle. If you hold it down you will get a fault.

Take this from experience with a 2011 RTS.

So was looking at things last night and trying this out. So here is what I noticed and wonder if it may have been what happened.

When I went to put the parking brake on. Left my foot just on the brake pedal. As I hit the button I noticed the brake pedal lifting. Raised about 3/4" or so.

When I took the parking brake off, it lowered back to the original position.

So here is what I think he did. He had is foot pressed solidly on the pedal and didn't let it lift like it should have. This is what bent the pin.

So I am thinking that as soon as you hit the button and the pedal starts to raise you can then lift your foot and let it take over.

Thoughts???

Yeah voyager pws, i always raise my foot up when i hit the parking brake, even when i first bought it. You learn things about the :f_spider: as you ride it. :clap:
