The Long Ride

I have seen many posts on Spyder riders going long distances. I know each of us are different but typically how long do most riders ride during a day, either in distance and or time. Any tips for endurance?

350 to 500 normally a day, dependent on weather. Take good breaks and stay hydrated, stop when you are tired.

DEPENDS

ALL rides are different.....
if i'm going X-country, 500 miles and 10 hrs is typical if i'm focused on 'getting someplace'...
if i'm going X-country, and i'm not particularly going any one place special, it's anywhere from 50 miles/1 hr. to 500 miles/10 hrs...
if i'm on a day ride, and i have a particular destination, it's a 'one shot' ride, with gas/pee stops if necessary...
if i'm on a day ride, and i have
NO particular destination, it's go where the road takes me, and it usually runs from 100 - 250 miles, and from 4 - 10 hrs...
so the answers are variable... and the more people you ask, the more the differences you will get...
whatever your choices are, ride safely and enjoy the scenery....

LONG RIDES

My longest ride was two years ago when I rode to Vicksburg, MS from western NC in one day, 518 miles. I was whipped, but it was a 98 degree day. This summer I will be riding to Deadwood, SD from western NC and will try to average 500 to 600 miles per day.

Whatever is comfortable...

longest 875 miles but generally 150 -400 on day rydes. On distance rydes 500 - 600 miles. You have to find your comfort zone. We stop for gas every 120-150 miles and walk around hydrate relax the power on. Give yourself enough time when planning so you never have to be rushed...

1170 miles in a day Michigan to Florida n back with a smiling wife... Very comfortable but we've done that n more on BMWs... Long distance on a Spyder is easy....

I'm riding from the West Virginia eastern panhandle to Tucson, AZ . . . leaving in a month. My longest planned day is a bit over 500 miles . . . some days are 300 . . . depends on what there is to see along the way. I'll start hydrating a few days before I leave and on the road will drink before I get thirsty and eat before I get hungry . . . and take a bit of a walk and a stretch every time I stop for gas . . .

Not a fan of the Interstates...

So when we ride we usually are more in the 300 mile range per day so we have time for some pics. Our June trip to southern Utah has a couple of 200 mile days so we have time to cruise and enjoy the views. Like Dan said, "It depends" . We like to get to the motel by 4 so we usually keep it under 400 per day.

I, along with Rattigan_Roger have gone to and from SpyderFest in one day. We've done this twice. It's about 850 miles and all interstate. Stopped about every 130 miles for gas and a stretch.

Just a reminder: It is not the destination, It is not how many miles you can ride in a day but rather enjoying the ride. I personally can't stand to ride with mileage counters and people who have to get home quickly. That just ruins the whole trip for me.

Bragging about how many miles you can ride in a day is pointless. (not to mention some times downright dangerous) It is also a bore and possibly doubting ones man hood to the point he needs to prove himself to someone by bragging about the miles he rides.

To me I like to enjoy the ride. Like to smell the flowers and fresh pine early in the morning, stop when something is interesting, go fast when the itch strikes me, and putz when I feel like it. I have been riding motorcycles since I was eleven years old at least 3-4 days a week. I am now twenty days from seventy five and still enjoy it as much as my first motorcycle in 1951. I have never counted mileage and am sure it must be way up there but who cares. I have enjoyed every minute of it because I do not count mileage. My days vary from 100 to 1000 miles depending on how I feel. I do not do any more thousand mile days. At my age I do not want to miss anymore "Happy Hours" and like to go to bed early and ride early.

OK I'll stop now, but really, stop counting miles and try to enjoy the ride to your destination more.

Remember your last ride will be horizontal!

I guess the question of the op assumes that you will be riding for a few days or to some great length. For me? I'm with Jack above. I try to stay within a 300 mile range so that I too can "smell the roses". Often times this is difficult when you are riding with others. Consequently, I've found myself riding alone. I do it this way because I don't want to "hold up" the others. Imagine riding with a group of others who want to put 400 to 600 miles per day behind them only to have one in the group who wants to stop and take a picture of a sign that says "Jesus Saves" or an old abadoned barn this is about to fall down.

With all that said, have I gone more than 300 miles? You betcha, but it certainly isn't my preference nor my wife's.

Since everybody has their own personal levels of strength and endurance; it's more a matter of finding what yours are...
I've been able to get up around 640 miles in a 15 hour day... but I was mentally exhausted by the time I hit the Motel door...
Riding those miles in heavy traffic in a "Toad Strangler", set my limit under extreme circumstances; I know that I could travel further under better conditions. The Spyder makes the miles pile up easy!
Build your daily mileage totals, until your body and mind say that they've had enough... I'd start at 350, and see how it goes.

I am with you Chris, riding alone or agreeing to meet at a certain location for the night with other riders has become more of a norm for me. It is hard to control the group and who wants to anyway. I do enjoy the company for "happy hour" and Dinner but then again when riding long distance I still enjoy meeting, talking and making new friends along the way when alone.

Longest ride for me was 561 miles (My house to Redding Ca.). Took 9 1/2 hours with stops.
I took long stops to stretch, drink water, etc. 4 stops for gas and I took about 1 hour total in stops.
Longest stretch was 150 miles and the tank was on fumes!
I was really worried I would not make it that last mile and I was on highway 5 in the middle of no where!

Just to add, there would have been no way I would have made that long a run without the Air Hawk R seat pad, Highway pegs, and the Tri Axis handlebars!
Prior to adding those my rear end, legs, and arms would get soar/tired after 4 hours.

Back when I had my health and two wheels it was not uncommon for me to do 600+ mile days. Some were of necessity and some just for pleasure.

Currently, I have back and hip issues. On good days, I can do 300 miles. Then, there are days when I have to bail at 100 miles.

I have mellowed now and like to view the scenery, and just pull into a parking area and smell the roses. Lucky that the whole state is full of the good stuff.

I now take each day as it comes, and ride as much as I can.

Riding long distance is relative to how much time you have to get done what you need to.. I've done many sight seeing low mileage days.. It's nice to know what you and your machine are capable of depending on the time constraints.. Not everyone is retired and the op asked for examples and I think he received a good cross section 😎

I happen to like taking pictures of old abandoned barns! ;)

Upper 500s is the longest day I've ridden. I prefer to stay in the 400 range. On a long trip I try to get 'in shape' with a couple of 350 mile days before pushing for distance.
