Bump Skid

Just bought a new 2014 Spyder RT and it was recommended that I put a bump skid on it for protection. Are they hard to instal for one with limited mechanical skills, like me?
Thanks, Ken (Gator37)

If you go to the Spyderpops website You can download the installation Instructions
This will give you an idea on the work involved

This link may work

Installed a bump skid last year on my 2012 RT-S. Would recommend you have a friend help you as the plate is awkward. The biggest issue was getting the bike high enough off the ground so that your drill & bit were in the correct position to drill. I used ramps and had to improvise from there. The plate is well constructed and much better than the little flimsy plate on the bike, not sure what that would have stopped. Also the plate seems to give more weigh on the front end. I also had installed a sway bar and between the two the bike stays on course without any issues. Good Luck.

when you look at the Bump Skid be sure to look at the new one with the Inlaid LEDs, really cool.

No need for a skid plate

I'm sure the folks who think this is a necessary add-on are convinced they can't be without it but in my humble opinion I see no need for it.

From the first, 2010 RT, through the second 2011 RT and now with two 2012 RT's we have never added nor desired to add a skid plate. I have one on my Honda Rincon 250 ATV but we don't off road on the RT's and in roughly 100,000 miles of travel with them have never had a reason to want a skid or bump plate.

If we come up to a ramp or drive that looks like it may cause a scrape we either go very carefully or avoid it all together. So far that approach has worked well.

if you want one, spend the money... it all helps the economy.

I think it's well worth the investment and I have givin it a good work out more than once...
As for installing it, the instructions provided by Harvey are clear and easy to follow.

On one trip to Reno I hit a major cut in the road, it was a trench that had been patched but sank down a good 3 inches. I hit the skid so hard it rattled my teeth but the skid allowed me to slide up an over it. I also hit a suicidal ground squirrel with it, no damage to the bike but it did cut the little guy in half and left his head lodged in the grill. I also hit a wood curb that I did not see as I was pulling into park for lunch. I took out a chunk of wood about 2" deep and 8" wide and again no damage to the bike. So.. yes it can be helpfull under the right circum stance, lol.

have the bump skid also & recommend it for the protection. it will save you an expensive replacement of the front trunk if-critters/road crap. You will be happy with the piece of mind!

I just bought a 2014 as well and am planing on putting the bump skid on for piece of mind. Only tricky thing I can see is that you will need to get the bike off the ground to install... maybe some ramps would work. Make sure to look at the installation for the 2014 / 2015 it is one page and looks very simple to install. Now I need to decide if I need the one with the LED's built in for more visibility.

IMHO you can't get enough Visibility.

I know many like the Spyderpops skid and I have nothing against it, but I personally liked the Show Chrome one. The bottom of the Spyder is curved so only the bottom say 18" wide will hit first. If you hit harder than that to scuff past this arc area, then your going to damage the center arc area in some other way.

Also the 14's and up are lower. The Show Chrome unit does not add as much space thus not making it even lower so you "bump" as much on the guard.

My .002 cents.

The bumpskid looks cool. Enough said. When you install it be sure to drill the holes as per the instructions. You don't want to skip those new holes.

Hmmm ........... Protect the front end,.................... protect the underneath, ...................more lights, ..................looks cool.

No brainer for me.

IMO, it takes only one "aw :cus:" to wipe out a whole bunch of "attaboys." Ergo, the Spyderpops bump skid was my first farkle.

Unbeknownst to me, I had scratched up my under body pretty good before I installed my bump skid. For the marginal cost, I think it is worth the investment.

That looks like pretty serious "curb rash"! Be glad you didn't have the lights!!

Looks like the damage was done before the bumpskid was installed. The bumpskid probably would have slid over the obstacle and only scratched the bottom of the bumpskid, like it is designed to do.
