I just bought a 2012 RTL in December, thought I did all my homework, after reading form on here yesterday I guess I missed the over heating issue. I know I live in ND but is it drivable in July and Aug?

:welcome:

Heat issues were discussed a lot concerning the 2013 ST and RT models. The 2012 is considered one of the "best" years for the RT and you should experience no issues with heat.

If you encounter heat that would not allow you to drive your :spyder2: in ND during July and August, that would for sure be an issue for the dealer to fix.

There are a lot of OEM motorcycles out there that generate more heat that you will encounter with the :spyder2:.

Hope you enjoy your 2012. It really is a great :spyder:

Heat discussions are all over this forum, I'm not sure how you could have missed it. When I was considering purchase in 2012 it was a known topic of discussion. So I was well aware of it. Decided to buy anyway. Yes there is heat but its very tolerable. The only time I really feel it is if it is over 85 degrees and in stop and go traffic.

Welcome..!! Welcome..!!

to the spyder world and this most informative site..congrats on your new ryde..:2thumbs: you should have no problems just enjoy ryding and smiling...:ohyea::ohyea:

No heat problems with our 2012 in Pa. We have just moved to the Southwest so we shall see here. Spyderpops does sell a block panel for the right radiator holes. We have the top one and have removed the right side panel under the engine.

What overheating issue? Details would be helpful so we knew what your are talking about.

My brother has a 2012 RT and it almost burned my damn leg off when i was out in temps above 100. I was wearing shorts because it was so hot so that did not help. We put the lower blocker plate on and it made a good difference, its still hot when the outside temp is hot but its bearable and only near the lower right leg.

Shorts? Long pants on any vehicle where the rider is exposed. (Exposed has a different meaning in Sturgis.) I hope you were not wearing Flip=Flops also.

I have a 2013 with the problem and I had no big issues when we went through your area in late June. I did have some problems in the Mojave desert a few weeks before that. As everyone has said, you will be fine.

I am not saying you don't have a heat issue, but to me heat is relative. I don't know if this is you first motorcycle or not, but if it is there will be a certain amount of heat felt. After all, the engine is encased in plastic. Traveling down the road dissipates a lot of this contained heat. With out knowing what you consider "hot", the temperature gauge reading, etc., it's hard to direct you.

The way I read this is he's talking about the engine "over heating". I've not heard of that being a problem. It may be a warranty issue, if there's any left.

Many remove the air box and resonator on the 998 to get better air flow around the engine and cooler riding temperatures on the tupperware.

I live in Redlands, ca. Summers here are always way over the century mark. I wear jeans, boots, a long sleve shirt, helmet and mesh gloves. No heat problem on my 2012 RT here.

Don't wear sneakers or shorts. Doing so will cause problems. Guaranteed. I know Jax on Sons of Anarchy wore sneakers--remember he was not a biker, he was an actor.

oh, the long sleve shirt keeps me from getting sunburned.

I was just thinking the motor might over heat, sound like I shouldn't have to worry. Thanks

Other than moving the canister vent tube, and remembering not to overfill my 2010, I never had any kind of heat issues with it. The 2012s are even better.

Did you really say there is no heat issues with the 2012?
Most of my mods have been done to get rid of the heat issue. Fuel boiling in the tank is a heat issue. Burning my right leg is a heat issue. Driving on the expressway and feeling like somebody is holding a hair dryer in your face is a heat issue.
Sorry for my rant, please don't take it personally.
The top mod that helped the most was removing the Air filter box and installing the JT air filter.
I have also blocked the right top hole and cut out the bottom plastic so the heat could escape under the bike.
I installed radiant barrier on all of the tuperware.
I installed radiant barrier no my fuel tank.
The next mod will be to remove the cat and ceramic coat the pipes
