ATGATT : two wheels vs three wheels?

Thanks for the feedback; pretty well what I expected.

Here in Central Queensland- Australia, its quite warm eight months of the year and on two wheels I can't bring myself to lighten up on riding gear : airbag jacket, draggin jeans, steel cap boots, gloves, full face helmet.
All this can be very uncomfortable when temps are around 37C (100F) and humid..

Hi Erik
I too have an airbag jacket. I assume yours is a Hitair one? I use a Hitair MS in the summer- its totally mesh and flow through. I have a longer Hitair "Euro" style jacket for winter. I assume you have never "used" the airbags? Have you found http://www.spyderryders.net.au yet?

Helmet, always. Gloves and riding jacket, most of the time. Riding pants, cold or rainy riding. Long pants and shoes, always. I guess that puts me in a SOTGATT (some of the gear all the time) or a MOTGMOTT (most of the gear most of the time).

I fall into this category. On the Ninja though, I wear everything. I have either full leathers for high-speed, long distance riding, and a Alpinestars mesh bionic jacket and Tourmaster riding jeans for warm weather, low-speed, around-town jaunts. On the Spyder I am somewhat more laxed on gear I admit. Usually no less than jacket, helmet, gloves, and most of the time -- riding boots.

ATGATT. Here's why:

While the Spyder eliminates a lot of the problems associated with two wheels (like trying to find a smushed beer can to put under the kickstand :D), and "low side" get-offs... if you have a single vehicle accident on the Spyder, it will most likely be a "high sider"... not a good way to exit.

Plus, in a high-side scenario, you may very well find the Spyder tumbling down the road, side over side, chasing you down... trying to do you more harm.

I'm glad you pointed this out. The Spyder lulls you into a sense of security that isn't real. Even with ABS the rear wheel can still lock, regain power and cause a high-side.

Just today I had a mental "burp" while riding and downshifted when I meant to upshift. Had I let out the clutch I'm not sure the rear wheel would have coped with that degree of engine braking. It could have gotten interesting in a bad way.

So thanks for this post.

Other Guy

I wear Joe Rocket mesh gear all summer. I saw it demostrated on the Dragon a couple years ago. Worked. I was on two wheels then. Now I have a hard time between my ST1100 and the Spyder.

One other thing to consider; "I did not see him before I turned left, Guy"Ride Safe and have fun.

Airbag Jacket

Hello mrb,

Jacket is a Rivet Airbag. Not much airflow unfortunately. Can be found at bikeshops for $300 so we bought one each.

Not had to test fortunately.

Thanks for heads up on spyderryder.

Hitair jackets are nice...I think there is a group here that is also interested in the impactjacket... www.impactjackets.com

I have to do a little more research first as they're supposed to come out with a faster-deploying jacket...as it is, watch the local news clip (Baltimore) that they have on their site...the jacket clearly saves lives...

The impactjacket is also quite a bit cheaper...

Hmmm - just knowing how I usually do things...

say I've got one of these jackets on, hooked to my Spyder, and I stop somewhere and get off, but forget to unhook it, aren't I going to set if off? Or would I have to jump off and run away real fast?

No, both jackets are set to a pretty good amount of pressure...you can't just get up and walk away and set it off...it requires a decent amount of force...like getting tossed from your bike, to set it off...this was a major concern originally with the developments of these jackets, but it has been fixed.

The hitair and impactjackets are the ones that are most known and used...the impactjackets are about 200.00 less...I will get my butt down to Silver Spring and talk with the owner and check out the jacket, how it works, etc...

I'll then come back here and try to get a big group together to order....this way we can likely save money and perhaps get the owner to put a specific lettering on the coat as opposed to 'Pharaoh', which is the current lettering on the jacket....maybe something Spyder-related would be nice...subtle but cool for us...

The jacket comes in yellow, red, and black/gray, so all colors of the Spyder are covered...

Go to www.impactjackets.com and take a look. Motza and I are waiting for the next generation jacket...it will have faster deployment. It should be out any time now...

That's good, because I'm pretty good at doing the dumbest things :opps:.

Spyder may be less likely to have an accident than a 2 wheeler, BUT, the consequences are the same. Every one is different. For me it is ATGATT.
