• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Rev Limiter on 2010 RT SM5

Hey folks. Long-time reader, first-time poster.
I was trying to back my 2010 RT SM5 on to my trailer for the first time, and had to rev it up a bit to try to get up the ramp. But I noticed that when I pulled in the clutch and tried to get the RPM's up, the thing would act like it had a rev limiter and I couldn't wind it up. Has anyone else experienced this? I haven't noticed this with my RS. Is that another "feature" of the Nanny?
 
:welcome: I believe the BRP won't let you use the full 9,000 rpm rev-range, when you're in reverse... It's a built-in safety feature. :D
 
:welcome: You pose a good question. The RT does have a revlimiter on it and that usually kicks in about 9500 rpms.

Operation in reverse could pose a different set of parameters. I have a bit of a hill coming out of my garage and it takes a little more gas to go backwards than forward.

Going up a ramp on to a trailer would present more grade and need more oomph on the throttle--IMO.

The fact that it did not want to rev when you pulled in the clutch may mean that there is some kind of limiter in place when the RT is in reverse gear.

These are brainstorming points on my part and I cannot give actual chapter and verse. I am guessing an expert or two will fill in the blanks.

I was only trying to rev it up a little (3000-ish?), but it seemed like it wouldn't let me rev it at all.
I was finally able to get it get it loaded, for those of you who were worrying… ;)
 
Oh yeah..!!

they have a limiter. I have not found an occasion that I was not able to back up anything but very slowly. Even if you are rolling backward if you give it more gas it will sputter. Conclusion pack a lunch...:roflblack:if it's a long way you will be a while...forward 9,500+ rpm's..:thumbup:

I'll have to try a test with both of my SM5's (one RT & one RS) to see if they both do the same thing in reverse.

:hun: How in the world did he do that?!? It must have taken some doing to get a Spyder on it's side.

You may be upsetting the nanny once you get it very much out of level.
 
I can back up fairly quick as long as I am gentle with the throttle. if you rev it at all the nanny takes over.
 
Reverse speed is limited. Yes, you can turn a Spyder over in reverse if you get too much speed and turn too fast. Just think of a Spyder in reverse as a "normal" trike.

Ahhh, that makes sense. I have gotten my Spyder on two wheels going forward aggressively around a corner, but only for the briefest of moments-then the Nanny took over and got the third wheel back on the ground.
But in reverse, I can see where it would get a little squirrelly.
