USAF - Happy 67th Birthday!

Yes, Happy Birthday. I joined when it was 21 and retired when it was 41. When i retired it wasn't the Air Force I joined. Political correctness and politics eroded so much of what I loved. And it's worse today. But i don't regret a minute of my 20 years. By the way, can any of you USAF guys identify my avatar?

I was in from late '59 to late '63; 3 yrs 10 mos 24 days, but who's counting.

I always liked it on those Airman of the Month quizzes when they would ask 'What is the Air Force's birthday?' I would respond 18th of Sept. It was easy for me to remember as today is also my birthday. Eeezy-peezy.

Yep. You got it. Great guy. He wouldn't shave that mustache for anything. A bunch of us tried to imitate him but we didn't have the clout he had. He was a maverick. Not a politician. That's pretty much why he didn't go above the rank of BG. I had the opportunity to have a few with him and "Chappy" James. What a pair. Olds was a triple ace. His first earned in WWII. The USAF is a much better organization since people like Olds served. RIP.

Duty at RAF Sculthorpe, England - I hated being here; due to CO & Exec being two of the stupidest people I have ever met, ever
Duty at Chambley AB, France - best place I ever served, I fell in love with France
Seperation 19 Nov 63 at MacGuire AFB, NJ - Got home just in time to see Kennedy get killed

I have no regrets. I came out a far better person than when I went in. Also, the G I Bill allowed me to come out of college with no debt.

We used Sculthorpe for weapons storage when I was at Lakenheath. The reason I disliked Seymour so much was the politics. It was political when I was TDY there in '73 and still political today. Several of the guys I ride with are still active duty there. I don't regret my time served but I just don't think I can handle today's Air Force.

I think that would apply to a lot of us.

And for the trivia folks: RAF Sculthorpe, England had the longest runways in all of Europe. Chambley AB, France had the only heated runways back then.

I think Sculthorpe is all but closed. Housing and the barracks were sold as were the mainside buildings. Only the runway, control tower and fire station remain in MOD control and is in use by a USAF unit for night tactics.
