BRP . . . An Open Comment To You

I am approaching the time where I need to replace the rear tire on my 2013 RT Limited. Selections are scarce, and the OEM tire has not been that great, as far as treadware . . . the typical mileage we get from an OEM rear tire isn't all that good, when one considers that the RT is a touring machine. Look at the mileage folks like Lamont, Pierre Poliquin, Joan Wise, Harvey Clark, Fred Rau, and many, many others put on their Spyders.

Our Spyders are not inexpensive machines, and I believe you owe us some choices as far as premium tires go . . . quality, high mileage tires are achievable . . . and, as the number of Spyders on the road increases, should be readily available. Will they cost a lot? Probably, but many of us are willing to pay for reliability and mileage.

How about it, BRP . . . you are a large enough company that premium tire manufacturers will listen to you . . . please, start the dialogue . . . get Michelin, or Pirelli, or any of the leading manufacturers on board to market premium tires for our Spyders . . . our lives are literally riding on them!

Devil's advocate here for just a moment...

BRP doesn't build the tires; they put out the specifications and criteria that they want, and it's up to the tire folks to decide if they want to play along...

i feel it comes down to the almighty buck, the tires they use must be cheaper in bulk than any other they can use, but as long as they are safe to ride on than they will most likely use what they can make money on.

But it is up to them to make sure the tire folks are living up to their part of the bargain and if they don't (and they do get a bad run of tires) to make good on it.

Hi Hayfield,

As you probably already know, we actively listen to comments and suggestions like this and take your feedback seriously - thank you for sharing it. I personally am a firm believer in choice, so you definitely are preaching to the choir.

Well put..!!

Now if this is not working...tire manufacturers are not picking up on it...why dosen't Kenda offer a high mileage tire and a performance tire. I know less sales is not an encentive but higher mileage will no doubt cost more. There are only two ways of making money here...sell a lot for a little or sell a little for a lot...unfortunately the roadster seems to have fallen into the latter..:roflblack: We will have to see how the Arachnids do from Vee Rubber.

How would you proceed? We've all heard the "scuttlebutt", about Kenda sending substandard tires to them... :dontknow:
Would you cancel their contract, and take them to court? :banghead:Do you think that would play well in the Corporate World? Would the other manufacturers jump at the opportunity, to fill this void? :gaah:

Does BRP just need to increase their budget for tires? Would THAT bring more players to the game? :D
How much more, are you willing to pay?

Bob you are correct, except

BRP dictates to Kenda (or any other tire manufacturer) how they want their tires formulated. With my tire issues and looking for answers I called Kenda. Very graciously I was told by the Kenda man...we build BRP tires to their specs and the tires you are running meet that criteria and he then recommended I go back to BRP..which I did..and they were very helpful. Will the new tires (OEM/Kenda on front. And I paid for a Khuma Esta on rear) hold up any better? That is to be determined. 622 Trailer tires..on going...file still open on that!!!

I certainly have never had any difficulty finding "auto substitute tires for any of my three Spyders. Tires that perform as well or better and get 4 to 5 times the wear mileage.. There have been dozens of threads on here to that affect. You might want to search them. At 16000 miles I already have new tires on all three wheels on my 2014 RTL. The cost less and wear better

The Kumo ecsta will far exceed the performance of the stock rear tire / I totally agree that the tires that come on the Spyders from the factory are crap!!! I have Federal 15in fronts and the Kumo rear and it could tell the difference right away.. The bike handles so much better and the rain performance is amazing / SO MUCH MORE TRACTION / Less tendency to hydroplane :)
My stock rear tire had about 3,000 mi left on the tread and I couldn't wait to throw it in the trash along with the front tires .. Now I have tires that work the way they are supposed to on this Vehicle :)

I had an replacement auto tire on my 2011 before I traded it in on the '14. Now I wish I'd had them transfer it to the new Spyder.

I just hope BRP will provide some adjustment for the poor performance on the 2014 tires.

If dealers enforced the law in PA.. There would be no trikes on the road! HD puts car tires on their trikes as standard from the factory. They would have to stop selling in PA also. :hun: Just not going to happen. Tom :trike:

First of all, they should have a contract with Kenda that specifies how to proceed and what their remedies are if Kenda doesn't live up to their end of the bargin. If they don't, then they don't run a business the way I do and they should look for new lawyers.

To answer your last question, either pay for decent tires up front or pay for them when you replace the junk ones later. You're going to pay either way and I personally would rather pay up front, but that's just me.

Tires

Being a new guy with this spyder/motorcycle only 66 years old. I have a few questions. (don't laugh too much):roflblack:
1. would changing the tires to car tires void any warranty?
2. The front tires are a simple change, but the rear tire would take a lot more work, for someone who does not change tires would I have to buy them online/at a tire store and then take them to a spyder dealer to install them?

In order for the tires to void your warranty; BRP would have to deny coverages. based on the fact that they caused the failure of the part on your bike.
I'm not sure how a tire could do that... :dontknow:
Quesiton #2... Yes, But just make sure that your dealer is willing to install a non-oem tire! This has been an issue for some of us in here...

There are plenty of car tires that will fit the spyder, just put them on and stop the hand wringing. I have a Michelin 215/60/15, why make a big deal out of this.
