Nervous about High Mileage

Hello All!

I'm new, and I'll apologize if this topic has been addressed on another post.

I've never owned or even driven a motorcycle, but I recently saw a Spyder, and I can't get it out of my head. I am getting close to buying, but I don't have the money for a new one.

I'm interested in a RT/Limited, SE5/6. I found one at an authorized dealership, but it's got higher mileage so I'm nervous about the $16,500 price they're asking. It's a 2011 RT Ltd with about 32,000 miles on it. They claim it's a one owner dealer serviced machine. What are your thoughts on a machine with that many miles? Should I keep searching in this price range? I can't see myself spending more than $20k on one, and that's really stretching it.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Brand new 13's are priced around $22,000. :hun: Have an extended warranty also. Check around. Tom :trike:

Even the RT Ltds? Huh.

I tend to be quite analytical when it comes to a big decision like this. I almost feel crazy spending more on this toy than I did on my primary vehicle, but I can't get it out of my head...

I guess I don't know if I really need the Ltd. - that basically adds embroidery and some other little things, right? I'm specifically interested in a passenger seat back, auto transmission, and comfortable ride.

:welcome: These bikes DO have this effect on us; don't they? :D
32,000 miles really isn't a lot... As long as the prior owner had kept up with the maintenance along the way...
I would ask to see the maintenance records for the bike, and I'd spend some time talking to the Technicians at the dealership (NOT the salesman!) about what they see when looing at it.
Good luck, and happy hunting!

I'd say to analyze the whistles & bells if the Ltd compared to the RTS. The look for a lower mileage RTS.

BTW the passenger backrest is on all the RTs.

Good luck & :welcome:

For a 11 limited that is not a bad price, around here the 2011 audio package (not the limited) is going for 19K with 27K miles on it. As said, 32K miles is not bad, about 10k per year. Some 11's may still have extended warranty, mine did, it has 2 years to go. There is a difference between the 14 and every year before it but having owned both I can say it is different but not mind blowing and the nice thing that came out of the change is that for people trying to get a used one there is a glut and the prices are way down. If the history is solid go for it, see if they can connect you with the previous owner.
Good luck

Yah, my 2012 RT A&C was 15k with 800 miles on it. It's quickly becoming an RT-S, will have upgrade finished in a month or so. If mine hadn't been such a good price I'd have just waited a few months and gone for a 2014 when the 15's hit the street, there is much to love on the 14.

Choices choices..!!

It's got its hooks into you. Was the same here but it was the RS for us. If this is the first place you have been keep looking around. The mileage is not bad but there are many with less. I have always felt if it will be my first I really don't need to go with the top of the line especially if the budget is fixed. Once you get used to it you can add what your missing and may even move up to the new ones. Jmo..welcome and good luck..!!

Keep Looking....

A friend just bought a 2012 limited in pristine condition and only 125 miles...lots of years left on extended warranty. He bought from private party. Found the ad and knew he was getting a Spyder, but didn't have buyer's fever (I'm guilty of that one when I bought my '10!!) Paid a smidge over $20,000. What part of US are you located in? What attracts you to this one? The color? The appeal of the Spyder? What is it about the Limited ?
Highly important to check service records...printed out for you by service department so you can study and come here and ask ? ... this is the place to get those answers. Keep us posted...we are in your corner....we alllll loooovvvveeee are Spyders.

Are there any major advantages I'd see moving from a 2011 with 32K on it to the 2013? $6k+ is a lot of money...
I know there are a lot of folks with the 13's who have not had issues, but there sure has been quite a few who have posted up horror stories of heat issues. I'd be extra careful and take that 13 for a long test drive on a hot day if it is one to be considered.

Just a word of caution.

And +1 on talking with the tech who did the work on the bike. Not every dealer is the same in regards to quality of work performed. You'll get an idea right away I think upon talking with the tech on what kind of service was done.

Good luck and hope to see you on the highway soon with one.

Pros and cons in my book:

Pros:
-- At 32K, this bike's been ridden. Which means it most likely *works*. When I see used Spyders with no miles on them, I wonder why they weren't ridden. Was the owner not a fan? Or did the owner have so many mechanical problems that they just gave up on the thing, and are now finally getting around to selling it?
-- Related to the above, the bike's likely been serviced pretty regularly. Someone who puts 32K on a bike is generally someone who takes care of their vehicles (again, contrast with the owner selling a 2009 RS with 3K miles on it... how did *they* treat their bike over the years?)

Cons:
-- 32K since 2011 *is* a lot of miles for a bike. Sure, Spyders theoretically last up to (and beyond) 100K miles, but the long-term reliability of these bikes is still very much an open question. And if *your* ride it a lot, you're going to be left with a Spyder that might be even harder to sell in a few years.
-- That price is good, but for just a bit more, you could probably get a lower-mileage bike with similar (or better) options. Likewise, you could save up your pennies for a season and perhaps buy a new bike *next* year, with no compromises.

BTW, sorta related: I'm a big fan of buying prior-year "new" model bikes left on the dealer's lot-- BIG savings that way when they clear out for the new model years-- but the downside now is that 2014 RT's have reportedly sold so strongly there might not be a huge inventory left on dealer lots when the 2015s come out. The good news is, the *2013* RTs will be REALLLLY cheap by then in comparison.

Good luck in your decision...

I turned mine in around the same mileage (a 2010 RT) and wouldn't suggest purchasing a used Spyder unless the mileage was very low. I wish I had simply bought new, which is what I did this time.

If you have a real history on it, that might be a different story, but I'd be very cautious.

As a point of reference my dealer resold my 2012 RTL with 43000 miles on it for $17500. I think you could get a better price on that 2011 if you shopped a bit... I know at least three folks who have ridden their spiders over 100000 miles so higher mileage doesn't frighten me.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Go to the service department - give them the V.I.N. and they will be able to print out all the service performed including any required recalls!

If the customer did their own oil changes, etc. that won't show up but at least you will know that too! Many owners can do oil changes without any problems - but some people like knowing a dealer did the work.

Avoid the "BUG". It affects all of us when we are looking for something like a motorcycle, car, boat, etc. We suddenly have to have it. No, we really don't, but the "BUG" tells us differently. Shop around.

While it is not practical for everyone to do this, I drove 5 hours one way to pick up my Spyder. Best decision I ever made.

Are you able to commit the time and effort for an more arduous search? If so, look outside your immediate area.

Good luck!

P.S. Name the dealer and someone on here will probably tell you if they have had a good experience with that dealer. Have them send you a PM.
