Tires...Again

Okay,
It looks like I am going to have to replace all three of my tires before the trip to LA and bjt says I may as well wait for the new tires before I put in the RideOn. That make sense. I realize very few folks have replace tires yet, but for those that have or who have looked, any ideas of prices and what is considered good prices. Lamont, I know you replaced your rear with a car tire, any problems so far? Thanks in advance for any info and help.

I don't have enough miles on this tire in all weather to recommend it or not. So far it feels fine but it has yet to see rain. That will be the true test.

I find it hard to believe you need front tires already. I had 25K on my and there was very little sign of wear. I think they are good for 40K or more.

Bottom line tires are still pretty cheap and it doesn't hurt to replace them before a trip.

I know I shouldn't have to have them replaced yet and Brian wants me to check with my dealer about possible replacement under warranty due to the way they are wearing. Brian says the tires aimed wrong or something like that. He said the caster/camber is wrong causing them to wear unevenly on the inside. So we will add that to the list of things for the dealer to check. If I do have to replace them myself I am considering the Falken Ziex ZE512 for the fronts, they are 175 instead of 165 but I think they will fit.

At best all BRP or your dealer would do is pro-rate your tires and thus knock a bit off the price for new ones - that is typically how things work with tires.

While a car tire might work okay for the back, I wouldn't try them on the front. These Spyder tires have softer sidewalls than a car tire and thus a firmer sidewall car tire may react differently when on the Spyder which is much lighter than a car.

I think the stock BRP tires are a well made tire and fairly priced. Typical rule of thumb is you'll replace your rear tire twice as often as the fronts.

I just replaced my back @ 15,000, cost was 130.00
The fronts look almost new, should be another 15,000 on them.
And I ride somewhat hard on canyons and twisties

price i was quoted

when i was looking at buying a spyder, i was told from the dealership. front tires are $80 apiece and $120 for the rear.

Okay, since we are on the subject.... I have about 12K on my tires, none of which appear to be wearing unevenly. Both the fronts and the rear have good tread left, especially the fronts. I was considering only replacing the rear prior to our long trip cross-country. That trip is being preceeded by a trip to San Diego in July (about 1500 miles round trip) and to Los Angeles in June (about 1300 miles round trip) not to mention any other riding in between. I'm probably looking at around 16K - 18K miles on the ODO before departing on a 5500+ mile trip.

Question is... should I do all three or just the rear prior to the cross-country trip and do the fronts afterwards? Any thoughts? I plan on adding RideON to the tires prior to the long trip.

Sounds like a lot of miles. I, personally, would replace all three before the trip to make sure that I didn't encounter avoidable problems on the road.

Okay, just took my spyder up and left it at the dealership. They are going to call BRP and ask about the front tire wear. I will keep you informed as to what I find out. In the mean time I just ordered a new rear from both bjt and myself. We also ordered the Kuhmo Ecsta AST from TireRack.com with delivery at ground shipping charges it works out to $67.34 per tire. Heck of a deal since the OEM rear from the dealership is $149.99 for one rear.

The other nice thing is that we have the BestPlus extended warranty and our 1 year service falls in line with our 12,000 mile check and it is covered as well as warranty coverage for the gaskets and the gear position sensor. So all I am paying for is my oil change, and the labor for changing my tires. I have a pretty darn good dealer at Nord Ride. Depending on what BRP says, I may have to pay part or all of the cost of new tires as well but we will wait and see.

I have 16k on the front and they are fine for ahile, I would replace the backs for sure...of course not seeing your tire wear.

I doubt BRP will pay anything if you're replacing your tires with another brand that they don't have a stake in.

I don't think much is done at the 12,000 mile checkup other than an oil change. Oh, they check various levels, clean the throttle body, Lube the throttle cable and footpegs (stuff that should be done every 3K by the owner anyway).

Are the tires you're going to use (gotta love that name - Kumho - LOL) CAR tires or Motorcycle tires??

Actually, more is done (recommended) than at any prior service interval. I only know this as mine will be coming up in a few months. I sat down last night and made the list in order to determine what I could do, what I will have the dealer do and what parts and supplies the dealer and I will need to complete the service. Your right - I was looking in the wrong column--- hate the layout in the owners manual!

12K miles:

Oil Change, lube some stuff, Inspect a few things,

Replace: clutch fluid, Engine Coolant, Front Y pipe gaskets, Spark Plugs, Bearing Seals, O-Rings and wear sleeves of rear axle, Brake Fluid

Firefly, I am replacing the front tires with OEM tires. Dealer service manager already discussed issues with BRP. If when they go in to do the tire change, they discover a problem with the spyder has caused the abnormal wear, BRP has already said they will cover the cost of the tires. If they do not, I will pay and we will monitor the wear on the new tires and try to pinpoint the issue if there actually is a specific issue. It is highly possible that the fault is mine with the front tires by not monitoring and maintaining my tire pressure properly. That is a mistake I will not let happen again. From what my service manager said, I had a hugh difference in tire pressure, one front was only at 7 and the other at 17. It has been a while since I checked it and we have had some crazy weather which I know the variance in hot and cold can affect tire pressure. If I have to pay for this set of tires, no big deal. The fact that BRP offered to cover the tires at all if they found issue with the machine is very good news though.

The tires we purchased for our rears are a high performance car tire, the same size and speed rating as the current spyder rear tire.

Also, regarding our BestPlus warranty, if any of the work they do is deemed repair and not warranty or general service, then we only pay a $50 deductible for the repairs. I think overall, I am very happy with our dealership and service manager and BRP has treated us right.

Okay - I get you now. Yeah - my bad on the 12K service - more to it than I originally thought - I don't like how the book lists the services required - would just prefer a list for each mileage.

I think you'll be fine with the rear tire you decided on. The fronts are what concern me the most - just not sure if a stiffer sidewallked car tire would cause problems or not.

Was your dealer able to check your alignment? Anyone know if most dealers are equipped to do this? I'm lucky that mine are wearing even (except the back wears quicker).

New back tire at 12K makes sense since they are replacing the rear bearings, etc.

I don't know anything about alignments and such but according to our service manager the cambers on the spyder can not be adjusted. At least I think that is what he said. So if you have any idea what that means or if it is related to the alignment, take it for what it is worth.
