• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

hey magicman how bout apes

And foolish...many states don't allow them due to decrease in ability to control the vehicle...think about being in an emergency situation...whoops...in addition, you are always impinging your shoulder...real smart...

I guess if you want to have surgery at some point, they're good to go...especially as you age you are more likely to get AC Joint spurs anyway (primary impingement requiring surgery), so why not just accelerate the process?

IMHO, they look absurd and are unsafe...then again, to each their own...I guess someone down the road is going to want to ride with their eyes always closed too?

no... i agree i tried driving a buddies harley he had apes i said to him those cant be comfortable he said o there great ...he has had both rotatorcuffs operated on in the past few years ... i bought a dyna in 98 came stock with factory apes ...had them replace them with sportster bars much ...
better:2thumbs: so the pic was just a joke...:D:coffee:

It's not that they don't allow them, they simply restrict the height of them. For example Florida says your hands can't be above your shoulders. If you've never ridden with apes I wouldn't go insulting them. When within reason they don't affect your ability to control a motorcycle and in fact on longer runs can give your increased comfort because you can lean the bars back towards you, which takes a lot of fatigue away.

Would they work with the Spyder, probably not because of the torque you'd put on them when turning. But they're still nice.

Its easy to notice that this would be impractical on the Spyder and is just a joke as tta2r mentioned later. I had a 89 Harley Softtail in California and had a local cop follow me for approx a mile in an upscale neighborhood. I was also wearing colors at the time. I knew I wasn't breaking any speed laws and finally he hit the siren. Asked for my drivers license and when he saw I lived just a couple of blocks away, he said he thought my ape hangers were illegal which was the reason he stopped me. I told him that they were shoulder height and that was legal. He thanked me and left. Actual reason for stopping: Profiling!!

Phew...much better off with what we have on our spyders! Glad you were kidding...I've seen too many shoulder injuries...

You're right...I think I remember hearing it's the height that matters...as far as comfort goes, there is NOTHING good about your hands over your head for any period of time...this is biomechanics, nothing more...fact, not opinion...

As far as apes not being over your shoulder, this makes sense...biomechanics...we know that abduction at 90 degrees in the coronal plane will impinge the supraspinatus, and this goes without mentioning likely subacromial spurring (the older you get, the worse off you are)...add that and you have some serious issues...even if you shift a bit forward to more closely get into the scapular plane, the acromion can be a hassle to the supra...also depends which type of acromion you have (flat, curved, beaked, etc...)...

As far as insulting goes, not my aim...just pointing out that the riding style is not a good idea from a health perspective...

I've never used apes that put my hands above my head. But like I said if you've got them on a bike and are doing a long ride it's very nice to be able to lean the bars back towards you. Especially if you've got a back rest or a bag behind you. You can really settle in and get comfortable. Depending on your height though anything of 16" is a bit of overkill.

Sorry...I'm a rehab. specialist and a teacher...anything involving biomechanics makes me drool!
I never rode w/ apes when I had my harley but I did ride w/ higher bars (for me they were high) - I couldn't do the "beach bars" that were on them stock. BUT, When I first starting seeing doctors for my neck they pretty much told me riding days are over because the position I was in - laid back cruiser - was bad for me and said ergonomically the sport bike position would be better for the compressed discs in my C5-C7. Ya know what? Now on the Spyder, even though it's not full sport position but totally opposite my old laid back position, my arms and hands don't tingle and fall asleep anymore and my neck isn't killing me after a long ride. Sometimes I think the full face bothers me but it's nothing compared to the problems I had before. So you being in rehab - do you think this position is much better for someone like me - Spyder position versus laid back cruiser position? Glad there's a rehab person on here - I paid tons of $$$ to have dr's tell me all about my neck and I walked outta there all confused.

I cannot legally advise you regarding your particular condition being I have never assessed you...what I can say is the following...

Cervical spine disc problems can settle down without the need for surgery...surgery is only necessary when muscle function is lost...most surgeons will not operate with tingling/numbing symptoms...the C-spine is a lot more tricky as compared to the lumbar spine...

Not enough can be said about ergonomics and proper posture. The truth is that as long as there is a lack of a 'proper' cervical spine lordosis, there will be disc compression. The c-spine is supposed to have a lordotic curve but very few of us have one. When we lose it (trauma, years of sitting at a computer, etc...), the pressure goes from the back joints (facet joints) and ends up loading the discs...hence the disc problems we see.

When it comes to riding, ideally, you want to be upright with the head straight...the cruiser position might have had you sitting back with the arms very much forward, thus creating what we call anterior head carriage...this creates a lot of c-spine strain...the muscles that have to keep your head back, primarily the upper trapezius and levator scapulae, are getting hammered...in effect, it's like being in a 'turtle' posture...

Riding position is only part a problem as we have the rest of the day (work, sleeping patterns, etc...) to adversely affect the spine. With that being said, the Spyder may be a little more comfortable for you as if you are more 'forward' (meaning, flexed at the hips, NOT the low back), you'll have to keep the head more upright...this will maintain the c-spine lordosis better than sitting back, reaching forward, and straining your neck.

Some things to remember about spinal biomechanics...NEVER bend (flex) the lumbar spine...this is the best way to create spinal compression...we have hips...use them...

As a general rule for the cervical spine, try to keep the head back (your ears should be over your AC joints), sleep on your back, and try to get the bottom of your computer screen at eye level, yes, this high!...this alone will help many neck problems...

The owners of ape hanger bars must really dig the looks, and like short rides. How can anyone go any distance at all with them? That has got to be painful!

And, on a Spyder, that would have to be the absolute ugliest bars! Come on, Jamey! Show us a photo shop with 'em! :)

Actually it all depends on how you position the apes that make them uncomfortable. The ones whose hands are over the head or the one who give them just a slight forward tilt would be too much for me. But when you lay them back towards you they can actually be quite comfortable. It's all a matter of bars fitting the person. On all the cruisers I've owned I had to replace the bars because the reach would give me a lot of shoulder pain. So I want something I can bring back towards me so my arms weren't locked.
