Moth balls in gas tank

When I was a kid, back a few decades ago, on the farm, we had an old beat up pickup. We used regular gas, and grandpa used to put mothballs in the gas tank. "Not too many" he would say. "Two should do it." He claimed that the mothballs gave the pickup more power, and better mileage. Though I don't know why he cared about mileage, gas was 17 cents a gallon.

My question is: what would be the outcome if you added one mothball to a Spyder fill up? Would it mess up the motor, or what???

don't think it will help and may make more damage than you think. That was a long time ago octane was from 40 to 60 later up to 80. Naphthalene was in those mothballs and may have worked then. No idea whats in them now. You were also running carburators now you have injectors.

I gotta say there is a lot of effort out there trying to get more distance out of these machines and they do very well as is. Being the average age of spyder ryders is where its at, I'm sure we all had gas guzzlers we struggled to keep running yet never worried. Now that we can afford techy toys we worry all the time....I for one am done and just gas up hight test (pay the extra 0.60¢) and ryde till it's dry and do it all over again...hyea:

Don't think I would recommend it in a spyder. Back when I was younger we ran a little dirt track and a lot of drivers would drop 2 mothballs per 5 gallon gas and claimed a boost in HP, I also had a few of them start having trouble with valves sticking after a while. Me I always preferred putting a couple of cap fulls of starting fluid in 5 gallons but you have to mix it in before it evaporates and it may or may not have cost me a few engines.

That's what I was thinking, and they must be pretty small...what difference could they make to 6 gallons of gas? :dontknow:
