• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

14,000 mile service

When I was in for last service, my dealer informed me that the 14,000 mile service would take 6 hrs. That would be $480 just for labor. I understand that the bulk of this is for valve inspection and adjustment. Has anyone had this done? Is it absolutely necessary? I'm not a mechanic and I want my Spyder to last and run well. I knew maintenance costs would be expensive, but I don't like to throw $ away.

The valve check portion of the service is your call.

I had one performed at 14K on my 2008 and it needed no adjustment.

I waited until 28K on my 2010 and it needed no adjustment.

Each time an expenditure of $800 or so. Will I perform another adjustment on my 2011--probably no.

I have also suspected that some dealers may charge for the service and never perform it--since most do not need adjustment anyway. A nice profit margin for them if that happens.

The 2014's RT's no longer require the valve adjustment.

Not doing the valves will probably save you $150 of that expense.

It's kinda like going to Vegas. You put out the money and bet they will find a problem that can be fixed under warranty.

From what I have seen of this most Spyder owners lose and the dealer keeps the money.

Your call.

Tough one..!!

I can tell you that I am at 18,000 miles and the valves sound fine. I use a machinests stethescope but this is not to say everyone can. I have for years and found it pretty acurate if you know what your listening for. Have seen a lot of posts where valves have been done but no adjustment was needed. Most shops are not going to steer you away from doing it and I know they changed the valve adjustment mileage. If you are at that point you may want to have it done. If you do see that they give you the changes made if any and let us know. Will be interesting to see how many need adjustment at this new mark...

but will that not void the warrenty if you dont get it done?

Those who are avoiding the service are gambling that fatal mechanical breakdowns will not originate in the valves. Others have mentioned you will get sound indications if there is a problem there.

So far, I have paid $1,600 for the insurance. One vehicle is long gone, and the second will be traded off in a week or so. Vehicle #1 is still running fine and I could sell vehicle #2 to a friend.

I wonder if anyone has checked their own valves and how involved it is for an average side mechanic?

Good question. The big portion of the bill for the valve check is the labor. About 6-7 hours, if memory serves me good.
