I do think its time for BRP to make a gas door as a part of the seat. I know--its not necessary, and we should all get off the :spyder2: to refuel. I have to get off every 50 miles or so, anyway.

It's just a suggestion for a convenience item, that IMO, a lot of people would like.

This would be easy to do on any Spyder seat
Since you do seats it would be easy to do before you cover it
You live in California so are you going to Spyders in the Redwoods?
I will be there and you can see the seat I did
This will be the first group I've been with since 2009 owners event
I retired 3 years ago now I live in no where California Ha Ha

I was so worried about cutting the seat pan I did not think about pictures until I was all done
I did not take the cover all the way loose. I only took it loose enough to cut the plastic seat pan without cutting the cover or foam.
This way the pan is held in place as it was originaly

That's correct
I marked the seat pan before I took the seat off so I knew where to cut and have enough room for a gas nozzle
you can cut it a little bigger than I did if you want more room. Just cut bottom farther towards the back not the top it will open at an angle more
Since this was never done before I used a WAG system
The cover wraps around the seat to the inside and then is stapled
I think you could cut the seat without removing the staples but I chose to remove a few where the cut is at top and bottom because I did not want to take the chance of cutting the cover
Just don't cut too deep or you will cut the cover
Take you time and maybe cut the final little bit by hand if needed
If you do not take too many staples out the cover will stay in place when done you just have to pull it out of the way when cutting then I used super glue to reattach the cover just to make the cover look good when you open the door . I use a small peace of Velcro to hold the door shut

It took me awhile to get up the nerve to cut the seat pan but when I started it was quite easy

I pulled just enough staples loose from the seat cover to pull the cover out of the way to cut the seat pan with my dermal tool
I did not cut the foam or the cover as they are the hinge
I used Velcro to hold it closed but I am thinking of using a magnetic latch
I believe it is invisible when closed as the pictures show
I like the way it works so that if I have things bungeed on my back seat I can fill up without taking everything off the seat
The 2014 seat does not have the oval insert as the earlier models did so this was what I can up with
I did not want a large metal gas door next to my leg

What do you think of our plan so far:

It appears that the fuel cap is just in front of the seam between the two body panels, and that seam pretty much lines up with a seam line on the seat...
If you cut the seat pan JUST where it starts to bend around forward and along the sides on the tank, and take that cut down to JUST in front of the seam line on the seat; it looks as if it might just work... :dontknow:

I really like the idea. If I understand it, after the pan is cut, its the foam & cover that holds things together. When you then raise the seat to check oil or whatever, doesn't that frontal section flop around? Or do you just fold it back until it the seat is closed?

Is it possible to attach a small piano type hinge?

The top part is perfect but the bottom needs to go back farther behind the seam
Mine is right at the seam but back a little would give you more room to get to the fuel cap
The seam is only on the front part of the cover it does not wrap around the backside so it will not effect anything if you cut the pan behind the seam

The cover is stretched on there pretty tight from the factory
It does not flop around
when you put the seat back down it sits about 1/2 inch out from the body so I put Velcro on it to hold it against the body
I plan on using a magnetic cabinet latch instead of Velcro
It could have 2 small piano hinges but you would have to remove the cover to get under it to install the hinges
The cover is pretty thick so it and the foam work well for a hinge
The only thing I see that might happen is eventually you may have a slight wrinkle mark in the cover where it folds back
