• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Key Copying Instructions

The fellow in Hawaii is looking better and better; all of the time!

Joe,
We really appreciate all of your efforts! Thanks!

Just an update on the clonable keys that I could not program using the Master Key. Started off with having the keys cut by a local locksmith who charged me $10 a piece to just cut the keys. Tried programming using the Master Key, got the bad key error. So I called a different locksmith who told me that they weren't sure they could clone them, if they tried and it didn't work they would charge me $20 a piece, if it worked it would be $35 a piece. Then called the nearest ACE hardware. They told me it would be $1 a piece to clone them, drove over and the young man worked his magic. Told me that the $1 charge would be for cutting new keys and since he hadn't actually cut them there was no charge.

By cloning, are you just saying they are programmed to the bike?

This is getting a little confusing.

And how much does the dealer charge for this that people are going through all this trouble themselves?

Oops, just found my answers on another thread...

 This is starting make me dizzy...

What (If any) is the difference between "cloning", and programming with a Master Key?
Do they do the same thing; but only get there in different manners, or is it the same process, with 2 names? :dontknow:

Although maybe still confused, this is what I gathered from this thread...

Buy key(s)

Have key(s) cut for bike.

Have key(s) cloned on a machine (at a store that has a cloning machine) to match original key.

Then program keys to your bike.

.

if you get it cloned it don't need to be programmed.

For What It's Worth

Cloning:
Put Can AM key in "cloning" machine
It reads & makes a copy of it
Put aftermarket key in machine & the info is copied to the chip.

Programming:
A procedure Can Am uses that doesn't work with after market keys.

In my case, aftermarket key $7.00 Cut key N/C To clone $5.00

Dealer price Lots of $$$$$$$

Cloning:
Put Can AM key in "cloning" machine

A lot of hardware stores use these 'cloning machines'..
Ilco EZ®-Clone Plus
Ilco EZ®-Clone

They will read the Spyder original keys.
Our local Home Harware (Canada) has the Ilco EZ®-Clone and can do it.

Before sending you original key somewhere for cloning take it to a locksmith or hardware store and see if they can read the key. As mentioned before they may not realise it will work.

Cloning: works for the Aprilia (and others) blanks
Programming: does the deal with the OEMs...
Thanks!

The Spyder programming process makes from 2 to 4 keys, each with its own unique digital security code. The Spyder program requires at least 2 keys be programmed and will not program more than 4.

Cloning takes one of those 4 keys and makes electronically identical copies of it. If you use key #3 for the cloning the Spyder program thinks key #3 is being used anytime any one of the clones is being used.

Cloning (in theory) produces an exact copy...
Is there any situation, where the unique signature of a key is useful?
:dontknow:
I would imagine that cloned copies would be "functionally indistinguishable" form the OEM BRP keys... :2thumbs:

if you get it cloned it don't need to be programmed.

cruzr, did you ever get the master key to come up as MASTER on the display? You were using one of the original keys to start the process, right? Did you try the kill switch bit that Silent Sam mentioned?

If you never got Master to come up then either the Master key has been changed for the 2014, or you got hold of a counterfeit master key.

What we have not confirmed, as far as recall from these discussions, is that a clone JMA, or Aprilla, key will actually work to start the key programming process. We need someone who has both a cloned JMA key, never programmed by the Spyder, and a Master key to check out the process.

Has anyone had any luck buying the key and cloning process from a local locksmith or did you have to buy the keys online then go get them cloned?

To clone or not to clone, that is the question?

Some of you are confused about this cloning thing and when it can or should be done. Here are my opinions.

Scenario 1.
You buy a brand new unused Spyder and it will be delivered with 2 keys. You decide you would like a third or fourth key. This is a good reason to take one of the keys and get one or more clones of it made. The reason it's cheaper and for most people it is easier. You do not need to get the dealer involved at all.

Scenario 2.
You buy a used Spyder and get only one key. This would be a case where I would get new BRP key(s) made and programed. The reasons are. If you lose your only key it will cost you $800.00 or more to get up and running. There is at least one other key, maybe more out there that can be used to start your Spyder. The the BRP keys that are not used during the reprogramming process will no longer work. If I was really paranoid I would have two new BRP keys made and have the dealer run the programming process twice and not use the original key the second time. Because there may exist clones of your original key and they will be disabled with your original key.

Scenario 3.
I lose a key (BRP or Clone) and I am not sure if this missing key could be used to to use or steal my Spyder. I would get a new BRP Key made and programed. If it was a BRP key lost any clones of that key will be disabled also. If it was a clone that was lost. Do not reprogram with the original BRP key that that clone was made from.

Has anyone had any luck buying the key and cloning process from a local locksmith or did you have to buy the keys online then go get them cloned?

When I started this clone key thing I asked my locksmith about getting the blank for me. He said he would not have enough demand to stock it and the minimum order from the wholesaler was 20 and both his wholesalers did not stock them and stated it would take up to 60 days to get. He figure out what blank I needed to get and that I could likely find it online cheaper and faster then him and he would be happy to cut and clone it for me. So that is what I did. I think it would be the same for all locksmiths.
