HECK, when Americas TOP OF THE LINE jet fighter (F35) has components in it that are manufactured in China because those parts can't be found in any other country, why would anyone think that a basic motorcycle lift would be made in the USA..... i even checked out MADE IN AMERICA STORES http://www.madeinamericastore.com/ and there are no lifts of any kind there... :lecturef_smilie:

i've had some really good luck with Harbor Freight... can't complain about their return policy either....

Old news topic but relevant to the subject

A group called the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) is criticizing the use of steel from China on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge.

In a new campaign dubbed, “Should Be Made in America” the group has set up billboards along Interstate 880 that depict the Chinese flag with the words “The Bay Bridge 100% Foreign Steel.”

Some hand tools by HF are ok. But every single lift, air, or electrical tool has been a POS and been returned with no questions asked.

I rather get the more "complicated" tools from Craftsman.

It is funny how people will pay for a "name". A quick search for the craftsman lift on sears.com and looking over the reviews. More negative comments and stars than positive.

However, this should not come as a huge surprise because its pretty well known that sears' quality has gone downhill considerably over the last decade or so.

I have to say - sometimes you get what you paid for. I use Handy Lift for full bike lift and a PitBull motorcycle lift for all smaller jobs. They are not cheap but very dependable. I bought the Handy lift years ago for my BMW K1200LT and now I park my spyder on it everyday so I do not waste garage space.

A lift like this is a simple thing. The hydraulic part of it is what failed.
But these things have been around a long time and the design is pretty fool proof.
It just surprises me that China cant manufacture something so simple!

Bottom line the new lift worked all weekend so I am happy.

I recall a thread on www.GL1800Riders.com some years back concerning lifts and the soft (cheap) bolts used in assembly breaking at times. The general consensus was to replace the bolts with higher quality if you were going to go with a cheaper lift.

It's one thing to have a cheap tool break, such as a socket or ratchet or screw driver. It's a completely different thing to have a cheap lift break with a 1000 pound, $30,000 motorcycle on it and you underneath it.

With all due respect for the OP; but I hope he didn't errantly forget to check the lock on the lift. On HF lifts their lock has a tendency to get in the way of letting the lift lower. I have caught myself scratching my head a couple times when not paying attention wondering why the lift will not lower -- that is until I remember to check the lock.

Just hope that wasn't the problem. I am sure it wasn't; but worth mentioning.

I was once told by a mechanic about lifts: Make sure the lift is of the quality of what you plan on lifting with it. Somehow that stuck with me, whether there is value to his statement or not; so I only use the HF lift on other stuff... not my motorcycle or Spyder.

No offense taken and yes the lock lever is pretty basic and I was very well aware of it. This was not the problem.

The simple hydraulic jack part is what failed.

And yes, always put a floor stand under anything you plan to get under. Never trust a jack.

It doesn't matter if you bought it at Harbor Freight, Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, or Northern Tool they are all made and China and some are real junk and some not so bad.

Not all of them. Shop around. Buy US made tools and they'll last a lifetime.

The one's he listed are made in CHINA!
