2014 Exhaust/Engine Sound..

Had the privilege to sit on and start a 2014 base RT this afternoon. Can't say I care much for the sound. Salesman described the sound as that of a Volkswagen diesel. Don't think the sound would stop me from buying a '14 RT!...waiting for an opportunity to test ryde one.

No chance to test listen yet. Only 59 more days till the official calendar Spring. Hope that will be ball park when I can become an official tester.

The sound from the exhaust is quieter than previous models and that helps me hear my music, i like it

We need somebody to make us a decent video of one of them idling a bit... and then taking a wrist-full of throttle!

Triple has Unique Sound

I have had 3 motorcycles powered by inline triple engines over the years. A 1979 Yamaha XS 750 Special, A 1996 Triumph 900 Adventurer, and A 2010 Triumph Rocket III Touring. They have an unusual sound kind of like an aircraft or marine engine, think WWII P-51 or Spitfire which had 12 cylinder engines or maybe a WWII PT boat. Considering it's just one bank of a V6 helps understand the sound. Not quite as perfectly smooth as a 4 cylinder but much smoother than a twin clynder engine, having the torqueyness somewhat like a twin but some of the reviness of a four. Kind of the best of both really. The Rocket III was a beast, able to "vaporize" cars in the rear view mirror.

Went to a "show and tell" at the dealers last week and they fired it up for us and I thought it sounded sweet.
I also look forward to hearing my tunes a little better than I did having to crank them on my 2012 RT Ltd.

Its an inline linear sound for sure and even a bit rattly. Much different than the vtwin. The 14' RT's are much quieter.
I couldn't even hear it idling next to my 12' RS with an hmf pipe....and that was while sitting on the RT!...haha

A VW diesel? I guess I'm not familiar with the VW diesel sound. I know what a diesel sounds like, and based on that, I wouldn't call it a compliment. I have a Triumph Explorer, and I can say that it is pretty smooth and quiet. I also rode a 2013 RTL, and even the BRP V-Twin was the smoothest V-Twin I ever drove. I can only imagine that the new triple is only an improvement on what was already a smooth and quiet (to my ears) motor.

HUH ?

This sounds like apples to oranges to coconuts to peaches to pears etc. ...This motor is going to sound exactly like this MOTOR ....Period , Mike :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::2excited::thumbup:

Interesting how diff folks perceive the sound: the one I heard, just at idle with a few fast rev's, reminded me of a Honda Goldwing or, as best as I can remember, my '79 Yam Xs750 triple which at cruising speed made a smooth ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound sorta like a Singer sewing machine. Loved the Yam...which also had self canceling signals that worked perfectly.:D

Guys; Please think about this for a minute...
About the worst complaint about the bike so far, is that you don't like the SOUND???????? :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:
Based upon that; BRP knocked this one right out of the park!!:ohyea::yes:
I've owned one triple, and ridden four others...
A Yamaha 850 is about the closest basis for comparisons...:opps:
The Rest:
Suzuki Water Buffalo
And a bunch of Kawasakis:
250 owned it
400 Friend's bike
750 OMG! Triple Dencos hanging off the back of it!

Size of the motor etc.

The size or displacement made a difference too as the 750 Yamaha was higher pitched and the 900 Triumph with aftermaket mufflers was louder and more baritone (sounded the most like an aircraft engine). The Rocket III had the Triumph accessory mufflers and at 2294cc had the deepest tone. When cruising at say 55 to 65 mph it reminded me of a marine engine (think old Cris Craft boats with inboard straight sixes and straight eights from the 1940s and 1950s). The Triumphs both had louder then stock exhausts on them so that made for my impressions of them. I never heard any kind of diesel clatter or rattle from them. Whenever I get to demo a 2014 RT I will be able to make a comparison to the triples I already had.

Had one at our SROA Meeting last night...

One of the guys from the local dealership brought down a 2014 RT Limited to our Spyder Ryders of America meeting last night. Of course I had to go outside and give it the once over. The engine sound did put me off a bit, but then again, so did beer when I tried it at 13...er, should I say 21...yup, when I 1st tried beer at 21 is what I meant to say ;)

In any case, now, I love a nice cold beer...and i'm just as sure that i'll love the sound of the new inline motor in the '14s. As far as sound goes, I personally still prefer the sound of my GS with the Two Bros Racing exhaust.

I wonder if the VW Diesel comparison is shared with dealerships. I say this, because my dealer also told me it sounds like a VW diesel. Although the comparison may be accurate, I find it highly coincidental that they all have chosen that particular make & model of car to liken the inline motor sound to. Must be the conspiracy theorist in me...
