RT-622 trailer wiring

I am planning to purchase a 2010 RT-622 trailer from a friend who does not use it anymore. I have a 2011 RT-s. I know that the wiring harness will not work but is there a simple(inexpensive) way to convert it or do I need to purchase a completely different set-up for my 2011. Read as many posts as I could find but none really answered my question just said changes were made between 2010 model year and 2011 on the RT. Any help would be appreciated.

Quote from Nancystoy in response to a similar question from me way back when.

The main difference was the turn signals. 2010 was 5-wire (actually 6-wire) with separate turn signals and brake lights. 2011 is 4-wire, with combined turn signals/brakelights. 2011 also comes with the water management kit, which is available for retrofit to the 2011. The wheels may be powdercoat or smoked chrome, depending on the trailer color.

Just another note on the difference. The 2010 trailer was wired as 6-wire, so the brakelights are separate. That means that the 2010 trailer will work with the 2011 and later Spyder hitch wiring harness the same as a 2011 trailer, with no modification. All the Spyder modules you can but]y now are 4-wire, no matter what year Spyder you connect them to. The older trailer isn't picky...it works with either version of the module.

Good to see Bob has my back. I don't know how he keeps track of these things. I wish I could just cut and paste my earlier reply.

As was said, the 2010 trailers are different in some respects. In addition, the harnesses have changed over time. I'm assuming (and hoping) that you intend to use the BRP harness/module/hitch. The only version available right now is the square-4 that was introduced for 2013. You will have to add a square-4 connector to your trailer or replace the round-9 Deutsch connector with a square-4. Square-4 connectors should be available at a good trailer or RV shop or some tractor supply stores. I'd cut off the round-9 and a bit of extra wire, and sell it on SpyderLovers if I did not need it. It can be used to build a trailer adapter by someone who had the earlier hitch. You need to connect to the brake light wires on the trailer and forget about the old turn signal wires. The wires in the 2010 tongue harness are:

Brown = Running lights
Orange = Left brake (brake/turn for new harness)
Red = Right brake (brake/turn for new harness)
Black = Ground
Blue = Left turn (not used for later harness)
Green = Right turn (not used for later harness)
Yellow = Blank (not used or powered for any year)

Wire your new connector to the wires I have shown in bold above and you should be good to go. I always recommend wiring them temporarily and testing before you make the connections permanent and waterproof. Please note that these wire colors exist only in the 2010 tongue harness. The other years and the back part of the trailer wiring (as well as the Spyder wiring) are different. Also not the following standard colors for a trailer connector. These will be what your new square-4 has.

Brown = Running lights
Yellow = Left brake/turn
Green = Right brake/turn
White = Ground

Cut and paste beats plagerism :roflblack: And we all know how terrible I am with the written word nojoke

I have a 2011 spyder and 2010 trailer and its plug and play.
Yes, the 2011 and 2012 harnesses work seamlessly with the 2010 trailer. A 2013/2014 harness will require an adapter or a connector change, and a 2010 harness may not provide functional turn signals on a later trailer unless rewired. It is a mess to explain all the possible combinations, but most combinations are easily worked out.

2011 RT 2010 trailer

Sorry to be so slow in responding to all the help. I am in China again but will be back in US in a week. The hitch and module I purchased for the RT has the square plug. Is there an adapter available to mate with the trailer plug and then wire into the 4 pin square connector? I realize I can cut the leads but an adapter would be nice. What does the female connector plug look like. My friends RT and trailer is not available to look at now. I will pick up the trailer in a few weeks so I want to be ready.

There is a replacement tongue harness available from BRP to convert the 2011-2012 trailers, but you would have to change the fitting on one end to use it on the 2010 trailer. Easiest way is to purchase the mating square-4 connector (pigtail) and wire it into the 2010 tongue harness. You do not have to remove the original connector, although you may find it more convenient to do so. You will not use the original turn signal wires in the tongue harness...just the right and left brake wires. You also will not use the spare. Tap into these wires in the tongue harness:

Brown = Running lights
Red = Right Turn/Brake
Orange = Left Turn/Brake
Black = Ground

You will not use the Yellow, Brown, Or Blue wires. Please note that these are tongue harness colors...they change at the back of the trailer, and they do not match the colors on the trailer hitch module or standard trailer lighting color codes. It is always a good idea to ring out the functions with a multimeter and make temporary connections and test the lights before making the connections permanent.

What plug and play are you using? I looks like it might be a five wire with separate turn and brake lights. If so, you'll need a 5 to 4 wire converter. You have a wire on the trailer for tail lights too, right? What color is it, red?

The tail light wire on the trailer is the Brown, which is two wires on the same pen solid brown/brown with a yellow strip.
