• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

There's been a lengthy discussion about fuel octane and the Spyder but what about the quality of the gas.
Is the only difference between regular and premium the octane rating or is premium a better quality of fuel?

The Federal Trade Commission has approved as final a consent agreement with Exxon Corporation that has triggered the launch of a massive consumer education and advertising campaign. The campaign is informing consumers that regular gasoline, not high octane, is the right fuel for most cars. Exxon is running fifteen-second television ads carrying that message in 18 major metropolitan markets, including New York City, Orlando, Washington, D.C. and Dallas. Exxon also will distribute consumer information brochures at Exxon service stations nationwide.
"Many consumers buy high octane gas believing it is a 'treat' or a 'treatment' for their cars," said Jodie Bernstein, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "But it's the consumers getting the treatment, not the cars. Most cars don't need and won't benefit from hi-test gas, so paying extra for premium gas is wasting money," she said. "Now Exxon will join the FTC and the American Automobile Association to get the word out to consumers: Unless your owner's manual calls for high octane fuel or your engine is knocking, there's no reason to pay for premium gasoline," she said. "This is a precedent-setting law enforcement remedy that will save American consumers money."
In September 1996, the FTC issued a complaint charging Exxon with making unsubstantiated advertising claims about the ability of Exxon gasoline, including Exxon 93 Supreme, to clean engines and reduce auto maintenance costs. As part of a consent agreement to settle the charges, announced for a public comment period in June, Exxon agreed to produce a 15 second television ad featuring an Exxon official who will say, "Most cars run properly on regular octane, so check your owner's manual and stop by Exxon for this helpful pamphlet." The ad will run in two waves of several weeks each; the first wave is running this month and the second will run in November.
 
Way back when I used to work at an Amoco gas station (early 80's), they claimed that their premium contained additional detergents and was cleaner. Visually, the premium looked clearer than regular. It was supposed to help keep your engine (valves, carb, injectors, etc.) cleaner.

Thank you...I've been posting many sites that discuss this but some here just don't get it...they want to argue an indefensible position...this is a FACT...higher octane is a waste of money in a vehicle that only requires 87 octane...I put in two good posts in the other thread....I get the feeling nobody here reads anything...

in the swedish manual it says 93 okt .:shocked:
we actually dont have lower okt than 95 up to 98 okt
unleaded fuel.I drive mine on 95 but tryed 98 for a,
couples of tanks and get a small inprovement at idle,
more stable but not more power.
I dont really care just love to ride:spyder:

My Spyder was hesitating and would even quit at lights, stop signs, etc. I had an appointment with the dealer to see what was going on and SpyderDee read on a forum that the higher octane gasoline "might" cause this. (I was running high test) I changed to regular and the problem disappeared. Don't know if that would work for you but for me, it worked! :clap:

But like everyone else (sorry Lamont) I want to put just 2 Cents more into the Juke Box!

A lot of companies try to make you think their Premium fuels have more cleaners added and will keep your fuel track cleaner than their regular fuel.

Truth is government regulation (US anyway) requires detergent additives in all grades of fuel. While each brand may use different additives that are arguably better or worse, each grade within a particular brand has the same detergent additives. So there is no advantage for a cleaner fuel system between grades with the same brand.

My take on the Regular vs High Octane is that regular is all you need. My uncle was a petroleum engineer for Exxon for 30 years and he even said that if your car / motorcycle is not a high compression type of engine such as a Ferrari or Lambo or a car with a turbo kit, there's no need for high octane.

Sure you may be getting a little bit better gas mileage because it burns "cleaner" but you are actually hurting yourself because the fuel is not being completely burned leading to carbon build up on the injectors and your pipes. Ever notice that your tailpipe is way darker after you filled up with premium? I've stuck to regular and just add some fuel injector cleaner such as Lucas Oil every other fill up just to keep things clean even when running regular grade

You aren't going to get any type of added power from just putting premium in the tank and it's not going to make your bike or car last any longer than if you put regular in.
