• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Home from the Hospital

Glad you are home and getting better. I hope for a speedy recovery. Take care.

Tina

..sounds not good - hope you get well and fit enough for spydering soon..
what I don`t understand is following - if an accident like this would happen here in europe (austria) the bike would`nt stand in a normal garage - our police would make a confiscatory to clear if there are foults of the manufactory or so.....?? or not
chris
on the other side I never had any problems in my 5500 miles - only the steering is now "knocked out" ..so 2-3cm (1 inch)to each side - maybe its a problem with the lot of pass-streets with two persons..
they will repair that during our winter now - looks like to be a lot o work
(anybody else this problem?)

We are so glad your surgery is over and you are on your way to recovery. Just remember to take things one step at a time and keep up the positive attitude. You take good care… Sincerely…. Doru.

wow. First of all, glad to hear your out and healing. But that is a scary thought that a machine I bought for the safety factor compared to a two wheeler can try to throw you into a head on collision. That bike should be checked out to find the cause, and not by a dealer or BRP, but by someone who will not be motivated to cover up the problem.

Is steering assist same as power car steering? If so how could it pull to one way or other?
It is an electronic, computer-controlled, servo-assisted steering, not the same as most cars.

I think Scotty's got the right idea. NTSB is a none bias government agency specialized in this type of investigation. This is a production bike and should fall under their jurisdiction. Only problem is how to make loud enough noise to get their attention. Maybe a request thru your insurance company is the way to go since these insurance corp. have a lot more resources at their disposal (i.e. lawyers, lobbiest ... etc.) Lets make these blood sucking insurance mofos work for us for once.

First Thank God you are on the mend and still with all of us.

Prayers go out to you to get back in one piece and back to a positive mental attitude as well.

On the business side of this , the NTSB is the way to go.
They are incredibly responsive and its an agency that I personally hold in the highest regard.

Here s their link as well as how to Ping the NTSB Gardena California Field Office I believe that is close to you.

Lets us know how u make out .

Glad to hear you're on the mend, hope the steering problems get sorted out.
The DPS on the Spyder is fairly close to the variable rate electric power steering on a lot of cars out there, seems like it has more teething problems, though. JMO.

get well my friend

we are glad to hear you are ok and our prayers are with you for a speedy recovery hope to see you in your:spyder:soon I am going to get mine checked out better safe than sorry I say god bless to you my friend get well fast...:pray:welcome

I agree. Scotty would the kill switch help in that circumstance?
If a sudden steering malfunction that actually tried to steer the Spyder happened, hitting the kill switch should stop it. I would not recommend this approach, however, since there are other serious consequences. First, since you are trying hard to buck the steering at the time, you could just as suddenly swerve the other way when the DPS was killed. Second, when you hit the kill switch, you will have no power steering at all to help you anymore. The steering would get very stiff, instantly, and you could still lose control. You also have to pull in the clutch very quickly with an SM5 to avoid sudden deceleration.

This is a tough nut to crack. I doubt there are good answers. I would probably just try to hold the thing as best I could, slow down, and pull to the side of the road. In this case, it appears that would not have been possible. I crashed my BMW R75/5 a few years back due to a steering failure, and slowing down at any significant rate only added to the problem, which eventually tossed me off and knocked me out for four hours. This is a lot like being on fire in a front engine dragster...you just have to ride it out, and hope you are safely in God's hands.

I, like others am following this story. I can't understand how the steering can turn itself when you are in control. I would wonder if the left front brake came on via "esp" ?? That would make some sence, to make the Spyder pull to the left or a dip in the road or something like that. If the power steering failed, shouldn't it just get hard to turn and not pull to the other side of an intended turn?

That's what I thought. But Scotty and others have suggested the electronics exert some level of control. I don't know.

I think this is one possible scenario...

There is a servo motor that applies either left or right pressure to the steering to assist you in the turn. There are a few inputs to a computer (speed, steering angle, maybe yaw sensor, etc.) providing data to a formula or a data table which the computer uses to determine how much assist the servos should provide. If any of the inputs comes in incorrectly or the computer makes the wrong calculation, it can be telling the servo to do the wrong thing. I don't know if this is exactly how the Spyder steering is malfunctioning but, from my experience working in an industrial factory, a lot of the "crashes" occur when the computer running a machine gets bad data and tells something to move when or where it shouldn't.

not to sound like an @$$

how long have you been riding ? the last accident we heard about (and correct me if I'm wrong) was a woman who got spyder for first bike never rode before ...was following her husband and a pack of bikes miss judged the turn drove off the road ...her accident was fatal .... and please dont take this the wrong way.... and i hope to god that you have a full and speedy recovery.... but i can admit i am a checkbook biker years back i bought my first bike a 883 sportster... 6 months later sold it bought a dyna wide glide brand new.... sold it 3 years later with 1300 miles on it mostly because i didnt feel that i could handle it as well as i should ....i must admit also that when i got the spyder for about a month i was very stiff armed it was a whole different feeling than a 2 wheel bike i was very paranoid that it would roll over even around the simplest bends i took it very easy did a lot of riding turning it in ways that i didn't think it could handle ... now i can maneuvers it better than 2 wheels... but it did take a lot to get use to i thought at first why did i buy this thing its worse than the harley but after talking with the owner of the dealership i bought it from and felt more confident I'm more than comfortable driving it now even a:coffee: little over speed limit ....again please dont take this wrong and no disrespect i think i speak for all of us that we are not only concerned about your well being but if there is a mechanical flaw then we should all be aware i have 10000 miles on my spyder have done some maneuvers that i didnt think was possible and havent had any issues ...
hope you feeling better soon
