Happy 'Australia Day' to all of our Australian Riders. Hope you all got the extra day off and can go riding..........Back in the late 50's, (yes I know thats a while ago), my ol' man applied to emigrate to your country from our home in London England and we were about a month away from going and for whatever reason we never went. Or loss I guess.

Moved to Sunny California in 1979 and love every moment as for the most part you can ride most every day, what could be better..Cheers to you all.

Thanks guys, great site. Hope to do some riding on a :spyder:in sunny Florida or maybe Texas one day (no helmet laws).

Thankls guys for thinking of us. My family emigrated from London in 1959 too - where did you live in London Spyderrider2492? We lived in Clapham.
Must admit I am SURE the opportunities that have been open to me (and now my kids) are greater than if we had stayed in Clapham (no offense to any Londoners or the British in general)

Seems to be a bit of a trend here Martin. I arrived in Oz, Anzac day 1975 from Birmingham UK. From what our relatives and friends tell us, we did the right thing and certainly dont regret the move.:2thumbs:

Small world, I lived just outside Croydon and my wife from Battersea just a stones throw from Clapham, in fact I used to work at one time at Clapham Juction, in a store under the railways arches, that bought back memories to be sure. (I see Jinx came over from Birmingham too).

You nailed it with your last comment and I agree, the 'Empire' aint what it used to be and I am sure the opportunitys were much better where you are.

Just got back from a brief Lunch time ride as the temps here are really nice (cool but nice).

Take care ride safe, not sure I would ever be able to make it to Australia but it sures looks like nice riding country..

Its a bit warm here currently with very high humidity and temps around 35 deg Celcius every day. Not good weather to wear jackets, long pants , boots etc and I don't ride without. Winter is probably our better season as here on the Gold Coast it is around 18 to 25 degree most days, and dry, about 6-8 months of the year.
I was 9 YO when we emigrated in 1959 but I can just remember going shopping in Clapham Junction. Amazing that we may have passed each other in the street all those years ago and now be conversing from different continents.

Interesting is that a small minority of Australians want the date changed because the 26th January reminds them that , that was the day the British landed here and "took" their country. While generally sympathetic to the original owners I often wonder if not the British then who? The reality is the continent of Australia would not have been left to the indigenous people at that time. It may have been the Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese or Russians etc as they all were active in the area - And would things have been any better for indigenous Australians under those rules?? Looking at other "colonies" at the time probably not.

I'm dinki di, but my Mother's parents are from Birmingham.
Must be the working class stock thing.
Visited England in 2000 and while I felt right at home there, Oz is the place to be for Spyder riding. Although, we had some 42 - 43 degree celcius (108 Fahrenheit) days in the outer suburbs of Sydney recently. Must divert that hot air from the fan somehow, or head way South.
Almost stopped me from going for a ride.

Cheers and ride safe
Al

The British landing in Botany Bay only beat the French by a few days and I dont think the Aborigines would have done as well under them. The Empire was long gone in 1975 with factories closing, high unemployment and not the place to ride bikes in the winter. Oz is not a bad place to be, with good weather all year here in Queensland.:2thumbs:

Now back at work and facing 3 days in a row of 41c... not happy (too hot to ride anyhow):chill:
Sorry to all those "snowed in"

Adelaide was where my folks were originally planning to go, I remember we did not get a choice when the application was started we were just given a destination. Oh well its a smaller world now and the past is the past and the :spyder: has helped me take away some of the hassles of late by just going out and riding.

Our temps here in Northern California where I ride are between 14C and 19C at the moment (not so in the east they are really getting hammered as a good day to them would be 0C) however last year we did have a week of temps above 43C and I agree with ya, thats too hot even without any humidity to enjoy riding...........Looking forward to a good riding year, regards to you all.

Yep us too - we arrived in Adelaide, from London early January 1959 in the middle of a heat wave.

What heat wave, 44c yesterday, 44c today and looking the same for Thursday as well.....:chill:

Good luck. We lived at Morphett Vale till 2001 then moved to the Gold Coast -not so hot here but humid - evenings tend to be cooler in a hot spell though, unlike Adelaide.

Have you seen Henk on a silver SM5? He lives near Marion shopping Centre. He picked it up secondhand here and rode it back.

Thanks Martin... sat in the pool most of last night, the only way to cope with the nights in Adeaide.

Haven't seen Henk yet, but there again have only seen Michael on his red SE5. Jason at Bill's Motorcycles (the South Oz dealer) said he had sold 10 here so I am a little surprised I have not caught sight of any others.

Hey guys, sure is a small world. Born and bred in Tooting (SW London) just a bit down the road from Clapham. Went to school in Balham (right next door), and Wandsworth Tech (just down the hill from Clapham Junction. Mothers family come from Battersea. 31Degrees here in Tassie and 24% humidity. Cools down nicely at night.
Have a good one
Bob
