Mileage vs Oil Usage

Is there any relation between oil usage and gas mileage? I get less than average mileage and use about a quart of oil between oil changes. Any one else experience this?

I have a 2013 RS and just checked mine. I'm just over 1400 miles since my 600 mile checkup and I was about 1/3 quart low. I think it is crazy that something that cost this much uses that much oil. Heat + Over Active Nanny + Oil Usage = One unhappy customer!!!

I use about 1/2 quart every 3K miles. I too had concerns and started asking questions as well. Apparently, this is normal consumption for the V-Twin.

I've had many V-Twins and none have used oil like this. I know BRP is trying to make people think that it's normal, but it's not. The only reason an engine would use that percentage of oil is do to loose tolerances or a leak, and my Spyder doesn't have a leak.

What kind of fuel mileage are you getting? IIRC some don't add any or very little oil between oil changes. I was wondering if the engines that have low oil consumption get better mileage in general?

So much for that theory. My average is 27 which includes some trailer pulling at 70 MPH. I get 22-24 pulling the trailer and 26-28 with an odd 30-31 when I drive like today in a Spyder ride at slower speeds.

oil usage at higher RPM

what I have found is that I use more oil and gas when riding at sustained speeds of 70+ miles per hour I believe I have even read this in the manual. I have 14,000 miles on a 2011 RT and every time we go on long road trips on the interstate where the speed limit is 70 my gas mileage goes down from 36 MPG to about 31 and oil consumption is higher as well. when I am just city and highway cruising my Spyder uses very little oil.

If the oil is getting in you clean side of you air box = low gas mileage. The oil makes the O2 sensor dirty, throttle body dirty, and makes the spark plugs dirty. The oil that gets into the air box is dirty engine oil and can damage your engine that shortens it's life. I have a 2011 RS-S that uses about 4 oz. of oil between oil changes(3,000 miles) that was the old maintenance schedule. My best gas mileage was 44.6 mpg.

Wut... I could probably get that mileage if the roads are all down hill with 40mph tail winds.

When I first got the machine I kept a good record of my mileage on Fuelly. What a pain. It was obvious that was a chore with no benefit but to make me grouchy.

And yes, I use oil and need to check it often. About 4 oz every 500 miles or so.

It appears that oil usage may have a bit more to do with the operating speeds... Which also affects the fuel mileage!
I try to stay pretty close to the posted limits at all times; around here, that's 65 mph on the four-lane...
Fuel economy is pretty steady between 32 and 33 mpg, and i'll add about a half a quart in between oil changes... (At approximately 2,000 miles)

I now have over 26,000 miles on my 2010 RT SM-5.

I have never needed to add oil in between the scheduled oil changes.

People here seem to take umbrage when I say if a 4 stroke engine loses oil the way some people have reported, then something is wrong.
I recall a post where someone had added a fitter of sorts to the vent to the airbox and that reduced the oil consumption.
I wish I knew who it was. I may be remembering the post incorrectly

Nevertheless, I still maintain my original statement. If a 4 stroke engine loses this much oil, something is wrong.

I wonder if the ACE Triple is going to lose oil ?

I think it was Doc, who posted some info about the specs for how well the rings are supposed to be sealing things up in the Vee-Twins...
It appears that they are built with loose tolerances.

Have you actually checked your oil between oil changes? Mine would be at the lower mark of the dip stick which is why I stated that I add oil to mine. Technically, I could go the distance without adding anything and have it within the OK range on the stick.

Coming from 2-wheels, I agree with you on this. I have never had a motorcycle engine in 25 years of ownership where it would consume anything. When I noticed that my oil level was inching down on the stick, I checked here and saw that it is common and pretty much normal. I don't like it, but the oil isn't coming out the exhaust or ending up on the floor. Also, I'm not hearing or seeing anything in regards to people having oil related engine problems either. This engine is very reliable. I've noted that I just need to check the oil every 2K miles and add some if necessary.

The specs are in the service manual and the are very loose.

2012 RT SM5 with almost 9000 mi. My personal riding experience and style I have noticed when I run over 5000 rpm's I will use a small amount of oil, and the longer I run over 5000 rpm's the more I use. Keeping it under 5000 rpm's I have never had to add oil. Mileage is 30 average, more or less depending on usage.

If you listen to the engine as it runs you can hear that it's not a tight engine. It's hard to believe that these engine run as long as they do with as little of issues that they have. I guess that their doing something right, just not sure how as most engines would come apart. BTW.. I get an average of 31 MPG and it looks like 1/4-1/3 quart every 1400 miles.

seems about right

mine has always used about a pint ( give or take ) between changes. it is what it is.

I had my bike serviced before my trip oil change plus had to replace steering box dealer and coorporate did the repair a second time it was recalled once and replaced I ran cross country 2800 miles with my trailer in tow this machine had never ran that hard or that long since assembly got 28 / 30 mpg average 70 75 mph i used over two quarts of oil for the trip the bike is a 2010 rts now has 11000 miles I am hoping the oil consumption will be less now after run out
