[Desert Spyder]

I was chatting on FB with a German Spyder owner today. It didn't last long because he was using google translator. I showed him a picture of my bike with the trailer from Spyderfest last year. He said the trailers were illegal in Germany, presumably he meant motorcycles with trailers, not sure. I asked why? He didn't answer directly but said, through the translator, that the law that allows 500kmh driving on the autobahn requires front license plates on the Spyder. In other words, some laws just don't make sense. I guess we speak a different language but our bureaucrats are all the same.

all Europe and south america require both front and rear tags. Many state do as well. As far as the autobahn, not a great place for pulling a trailer if you plan to keep up with traffic. I don't think trailers are illegal but may be prohibited in some areas. Now in south america anything goes. And go it will if you don't keep an eye on it at all times...nojoke

as you know Germany is one of the last countrys of the world, where you are allowed to drive as fast as you want (on the Autobahn !!) - good for testing the max-speed of a spyder .. but they still have a lot of different laws for their cars/bikes than the rest of europe .. I heared that the way how the Trailer is connected to the Spyder (on the swingarm) is not allowed there, and the max speed with a trailer would be max 38 mls/hour and I never saw a front license plate from all the other countrys on the last european Events .. look here: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/media.php?do=details&mid=386

U guess u didnt get it right.
First of all: on motorcycles in europe, u dont have front licence plate. Just like in states. So u guys were wrong

And second- i think the guy wanted to say, u need to drive on autobahn with speed at least 50miles per hours. Which is 80km/h. Cars with construction speed less than 80km/h cant go to highway. I dont see reason why u cant have trailer over here in europe. I saw manny bikes like that. Maybe u cant drive, unless u have a second licence plate. Any vehicle on the road need to have one.

Just repeating my German messenger said. He's a narrator for a Spyder forum as well. My guess thats a moderator. He works for Mercedes. Maybe the lack of a front license plate may be the reason.

Spyders in Europe

I have been looking into renting a spder in Europe for a 2 week vacation. The only rental I could find was in Switzerland. Emailed to get more information. Website talked only about riding in Switzerland and nothing about other countries. Their German and Italian offices do not handle spyders. Would prefer the spyder but may have to be content with a BMW and rent in Germany for the trip. You do need an international MC DL endorsement to rent. Funny that the Spyder site said you only need a valid international DL for the spyder. Will post when I get additional information. They did say trailers are not allowed on their rental bikes. No pictures of any bikes with front LP. In China we needed both a back and front plate on the bike. Driving there is an "exciting" experience. The car drivers there are ready for the cycles and scooters to make any and all kinds of illegal and dangerous moves. They simply honk their horns and allow you to do something stupid.

you will find a lot of dealers who do also rent the spyders - just search in google with : "can am spyder Vermietung" - which is the german word for : "rent" - what part of europe are you planning to visit ???

A couple of rental places are in czech republic. Prague, Ceske Budejovice. And I can hook u up i Slovakia in can am dealer. 40km away from vienna.

Spyder rental in Europe

My daughters boyfriend and I plan to fly to Germany rent bikes and travel south into Italy where he has relatives. From there a different route back north. I will only take 2 weeks holiday but he plans to stay longer and visit more friends and relatives in the UK. We have a good friend from Denmark who will meet us in Germany and kind of act as a guide. Our contacts so far have yielded nothing for spyders. Renting them from a dealer is a good idea. I will pursue that suggestion this week. Thanks for the tip. Mike

I'm in awe in some of pictures I see of Spyders ryding in Europe. The scenery is breathtaking! I live in the Mojave Desert. The only breath taking thing out here is when you ryde by the water reclamation facility.
