SE5 Problems Again

Figures, I've had my spyder back 5 days since the dealership told me they couldn't find the reason for my strange throttle behavior last week which I thought may have been gear box related.

Now today going down the high way it had difficulty shifting from 4th into 5th, it slipped for a second, and then put "E" in the gear selector, displayed "CHECK TRANSMISSION", flashed "R" and "N", and turned on the Engine Light.

When I down shifted to 4th, it went away.

The next time I went into 5th, it did the same thing, it chugged going into gear, and threw the same lights.

I already had the Gear Position Sensor replaced a year and a half ago

Is my dealer incompetent?? I don't feel like I should be spending so much time in the *******g shop!

How many miles have driven when this issue started? Is your oil serviced properly?

When it "first" started? I was at 500 miles and the GPS sensor was replaced.

In May of this year, around 6000 miles it refused to transition between 1st, N, and Reverse at times without turning the machine off and back on.... but the problem went away after a few weeks and I didn't get it in for service, no error codes or engine light came on.

I had the 9300 mile service 3 weeks ago, everything checked out, it had a full oil change

2 weeks ago I nearly got stranded 150 miles from home at a rest stop. I got back on the spyder, fired it up, it claimed to be in 1st gear, but the throttle would top out at 2000RPM and quickly fall back to idle, even though I could be holding the throttle full open. It would repeatedly go up to 2000RPM every time I pulled the throttle back, but then would go back to idle. Turned it on and off about 10 times before the issue disappeared. It occurred again the next day, but then stopped happening. No engine light or message on the dash. I brought it back to the dealer, they had it for a week. They said there were no error codes, they couldn't reproduce the problem. They for some reason threw platinum plugs at it, so instead of a free warranty check it cost me $80 to bring it in. Their excuse was "Those two days were 100 degree days, you should be fine"

Less than a week after getting it back, now its giving me the problem I had when I first bought it, where its refusing to go into 5th gear without a fit. Its currently at about 10,500 miles.

To me, it looks like the gear position sensor was never fully fixed... I bring it to a dealer thats an hour out of the way because my local dealer 5 minutes away was a terrible sales experience that I walked away from; but I may just have to bring it to them for service... these continued transmission problems need to stop.

Seems to me..!!

they are not getting to the problem. Shifting problems can be clutch, oil, sensor, lever related. The rev limit is almost like limp mode. You may have a good service department at the dealer close to you even if their sale department is below par. May be worth a try...:dontknow:

Not a mechanic either, but will say that you still have a problem that needs to be fixed. All of the above postings are probable culprits in your situation. It does sound like an inexperienced or incompetent service department may be adding to the issues.

The experts will surely come on with more information.

Well, I contacted the nearby dealer and they said 2 weeks just to get to looking at it...
Contacted another one ran by a large auto dealer and they said they can have it looked at in 2 days...
I can't even call the dealer that has been servicing it, for some stupid reason they are closed on Mondays :banghead:

For what its worth i had the shift linkage fall off the splined shaft while on a short trip. Was able to repair and continue. It looked as though the set screw had loosened up after 4 years of shifting. Shifts like a new Spyder...........09 SE5

My dealer, Seminole Power Sports in Sanford, Flarda, HAD been open six days a week. (closed on Sundays). However, back in I believe April of this year the are closed on Mondays as well. Stupid reason given was that the economy these days was not all that robust for "sports sales" thereby rendering a cut back on overhead expenses necessary, and that Mondays did not generate all that much traffic.

Sorry too hear that, let the mechanic know what's going on and telling them what you think is wrong doesn't not help. JMHO. They will find out what is wrong, and they will fix it . Hopefully you'll be in the road soon.

Similar

I had a similar experience, too. Turns out that the paddle shifter is going bad. The tech at my dealership pulled a code of P0826. My bike was not chugging during gear shifts, however, it did show a check transmission message on the display. When you take the bike in for servicing, ask the tech to take a close look at the paddle shifter.

I was thinking the same thing. You're doing yourself a disservice. Check out your local service department...................just because the sale was a bummer may have nothing to do with their service department. If it turns out they suck too.......................then you'll know the dealership in general is bad.

So here is the latest, I got a call back from dealer # 2 today

They told me my oil is really low and dirty and they think that is the cause of the issue, they asked to do an oil change.

I of course we stunned, because dealer #1 charged me for an oil change 4 weeks ago and after I got it back from that 9300 mile service was when all my problems started cropping up, and when i brought it back to dealer #1 that second time they kept it for a week and just said "Oh, its the heat".

There are no signs of oil leakage, I barely rode it a week after that first service visit before i started having problems, and no more than 4 days after the second service visit. It is well known oil is important to the SE5, but I didn't check it since my assumption was they just replaced it and filled it up, as my invoice stated. The fact that the technician who worked on it never checked is kind of appalling.

If it ends up being just a oil change that was charged for but never performed that made me have several weeks of having the spyder in the shop, I am going to be pissed as hell....

When ever I take mine in I am standing there with the tech. If I can't then I check over the Spyder before I ride off. Hope no damage was done to low oil.

I'd yank out the dipstick and tell that technician to bend over.

+100

First thing I did after my 600 mile was ride it and come back to the dealer and check the oil. If it was not right, that dip stick would have gone where it deserved to be!

In the end I have faith in my dealer right now but as others have found, that can change.

I took mine in for a 600 mile check. The dealer charged me for an oil change but did not do it. I now demand the used oil filters and o rings be returned to me, and I use a different dealer. Some of these mechanics think that people who are smart enough to be able to pay cash for a Spyder are idiots. They are wrong.

I think some of these dealers think "an oil change at 600 miles?"
Lets charge for it and not do it as it is not needed!

I hate when a shop rips you off! I had it happen recently with a shop I take my car to and had done so for many years but they changed ownership! BE SMART! Know what your getting and double check!
It's not that hard to check work they said they have done! Hell just dust on certain things can show you it has never been touched or has!

A pencil mark on a part works well too. But by asking for the used parts they know I'm looking. If I ever get one back that does not have my pencil mark, I will complete a crime report at the local police station.

platinum certified mechanic

a good thing to check for is your mechanics certifications if they are platinum certified for can am then you can bet they are a top quality mechanic ask your service manager for his mechanics certs typically they will have them hanging right in the service department if he can't produce any certs try another dealer as the platinum certs show that they have the very best and proper training BRP has available

Interestingly, the original dealer has been cooperative and has paid the second dealer directly for the oil change.

They however told me they had kept the gaskets from the "original" oil change a month ago and therefore the oil change was performed, which I don't know anyone who holds onto parts you would normally throw out and I work with a lot of people who have come from the auto mechanic line of work who looked at me and did the "they said what??" routine...

I'm set to pick it up tomorrow am, it better have really needed an oil change and hopefully it is "problem solved" and not going to break the next day.
