Poor Mileage

Does anyone know why my 2013 RT Limited, would only get about 15-18 miles per gallon? I am only getting about 115 miles to the tank. I have noticed that some riders have posted up to 34 mile per gallon.

More info, ie; how many miles on the Spyder, How are you filling the tank, And how are you checking the mpg.
Also just in case you don't know the tank is 6 gal. not the advertised 6.6 gal..

Not enough info to give an answer. Mileage? Riding style? Gas used? I get ~26.5mpg w/1k miles using 93 so far and expect better as it ages sorta like good Scotch. I am trying a tank of non ethanol right now and am waiting till the rain stops to empty it and see what I get.

We're not getting enough information here...
How is your bike being ridden? The right wrist and loud grip REALLY have the largest effect on how much it hurts at the pump?
How many miles are on your bike? They will loosen up and start to run "frrer" that help with the mileage.

Are you actually tracking your mileage or doing it in your head? Reason I ask is when you are refueling such a small tank, even a small difference in the amount of fuel you are using can make a big difference in what you perceive to be your gas mileage.

Tracking using a program like gasdandy or the website fuelly.com is much more accurate.

Also, my experience is: if you try and fill the tank quickly, the nozzle at the pump will stop the flow of gas well before you are filled. You have to learn a technique to filling the tank. Sucks that is true, but most Spyder owners will agree with me.

Lastly, and you will not like this, if you are only getting what you are stating -- you have the worst gas mileage of anyone I have seen comment on mileage in this FORUM.

All the advice you are getting about shifting at a certain RPM is good advice, but if anyone thinks that is the difference between you getting 15 (or even 18) miles per gallon and the 30 I get -- they are plain crazy IMHO.

Yes, you will see a slight improvement as everything seats properly, etc. but once again, not enough to explain the huge differences you are talking about between what you are experiencing and others are reporting.

Look at my chart - right from the beginning I was in the low 30's. Major anomalies in mileage from fill-up to fill-up are probably more related to improper fill-ups at the pump then actual differences. You can only judge your true mileage overtime, not based upon 1 fill-up.

:welcome: The posts above have given some good advice. Most get 30-31 miles per gallon across the board. Keeping rpm's up and not lugging the :spyder2: will help towards better mileage. As others have mentioned, a little more information might be helpful.

I have about 2,700 miles on the Spyder and I have been using 93 Octane. I took the 6.6 advertised capacity of the tank and divided it by the 115 miles per tank I am getting. Using 6 gallons as the capacity I get 19.16mpg. I normally fill the tank to the top without overfilling it. Thank you for your response.

The bike seems to be a little sluggish on the highway, but I am comparing it to a GL1800 Goldwing, so I am not sure. I use 93 Octane, and average between 70-80 mph on the highway. The bike has about 2700 miles on it.

You're not figuring your mileage correctly. Record the mileage at fill-up. At the next fill-up record both the mileage AND the number of gallons pumped. Subtract first mileage from second and divide by gallons.

Example: 1st mileage = 542; 2nd = 668; difference = 126. Gallons pumped = 4.79. MPG =126/4.79= 26.3.

My worst mileage was on a trip from VA to Maggie Valley and Waynesville, NC when the 2010 RT SM5 LE pulling the loaded RT622 trailer (about 200lb load) and had around 1800 miles on the RT. This trip with stops to visit friends in Western VA was around 1100 miles round trip and my average was 27.5 MPG for the entire trip including riding the Tail of the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

It's starting to sound a lot like Math in here...

if you nozzle all the way in you only 4 gallons to 4.2 gallons in bring nozzle to the first mark you put in almost another gallon in.

You say you get 115 miles to a tank but how many gallons are you putting in after the 115?

Here's what you do..!!

set trip meter to zero..fill up..ryde till light comes on..fill up..read trip meter and divide by gallons purchased. This will give you your mpg's. Try to fill the tank to the same level each time..if you are getting that low a mileage you should have some codes popping up on the mixture, or your neighbor is getting some of your mileage..!!:roflblack:

:agree: I reset the trip meter every fill up and calculate the mileage based on my next fill. I.E. 120/4.5gal =26.6 mpg that was my last fill up. Going higher speeds should also equate to lower mileage doing 80mph:shocked: is not helping especially with the shields up.

You got it perfect, especially try to fill the tank to the same level each time.
