• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Bad key

I have used the same ky to start my new 2012. This week it would not start and a warning came up saying that it was a "bad key". Has anyone else had this problem? What was the solution? My seond key works fine.

It has not been a big reported issue. But from what I have read the chip in the key is expected to last more than 20 years, but of course anything can fail earlier than expected. Since you have determined that it is the key and it is repeatable. Take it back to the dealer, get a new one cut and programed. It should be covered under warranty.

:agree: "Bad Key", is another way of saying, "See your dealer, and let the warranty pay for whatever is needed."

I will ask a question and hope somebody with knowledge will answer.
Can a magnetic source wipe out/screw up a Spyder key ? With my verrrry limited knowledge of computer type stuff, I would guess it would.
Thanks for any answer

to the best of my knowledge the RFID chips are non battery operated, they work like this:

  • Data* stored within an RFID tag's microchip waits to be read.
  • The tag's antenna receives electromagnetic energy from an RFID reader's antenna.
  • Using power from its internal battery or power harvested from the reader's electromagnetic field, the tag sends radio waves back to the reader.
  • The reader picks up the tag's radio waves and interprets the frequencies as meaningful data.

Hope this is helpful:yes:

Might add..!!

Coming up now, could the high heat factor in fields and age or condition of the keys. Nice to know if re-programming would fix the problem. Other options can get costly..!! :dontknow:

Not from what I have read. It is not like a magnetic strip on the back of a credit card or hotel key card that can be erased and rewritten.

If you have a "Bad" key take it and the bike to the dealer. There they will make the "Bad" key sit in the corner until its behavior improves. Then it will join the other keys and perform as it should. It probably has a "Bad" chip on its shoulder and needs replacement.

I had a spare key programmed and watched while they did it. It took the service writer and the tech 3 or 4 tries before they got all 3 or my keys operational. After the spare was done then one of my original didn't work. That happened couple times before they got all 3 working. :lecturef_smilie:

I had my 2010 RS for about 9 months. I had never had a problem cranking the machine. I came out one morning to go on a ride with my CMA group. Put key in bike, ran through little ritual procedure, pushed button to start----NOTHING!!! This happened on a Saturday, dealer not open until Tuesday. I tried to crank the bike many times during the next few days with the same results. Tuesday morning, before I called the dealer, I decided to try my second key. Bike started with no hesitation. Called dealer and they told me to bring it in. They could find nothing wrong with the bike or the keys. The bike would start with either key. Never had the problem again. My bike never displayed a code:dontknow: Go figure.

Arrived in Montreal on July 6 and Monday visited local dealer and had new key made. All working now.
