• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

You might try to remove the left body panel and get a metal wire clothes hanger and try to reach the release catch.

Maybe others but all I can think of at the moment.

A couple of suggestions for the future. First, find that second key! If you lose the first, and don't have the second, you will be springing for a lot more than just a key. They need a good key to program another like it.

Second, rig an emergency trunk release like some of us did. Trunk release thread A cable from the catch to somewhere handy does the trick. Some ran a bare wire, I used a real cable and rigged a sheath. Works best if you rig a trunk popper spring, too. If I had done one earlier, I would have saved myself a two-hour ride each way to get the spare key for my wife.

Now that's a good idea! I'm bound to lock mine in someday. So far not yet but I'm sure it will happen. HDX carries the other key so if I ride and he's not around, I'll have to think about that.
 
How the heck did you lock the key in the trunk anyway? You can't open the trunk without the key in the ignition, and generally, it's a good idea to keep the key there while you're in the trunk...

Some have put the key in their coat pocket and forgot and then put the coat in the trunk. The simple wire emergency release is a nice peace of mind feature just in case you do find yourself looking at the closed trunk and realizing the key is in your coat pocket in the trunk.
 
on the clutch side of the handle bars you'll see a cable running from the bars under the bodywork ... pull that cable housing and it will unlatch the trunk ... don't ask me how I know !!! :thumbup:

I'm a little dense and still not getting this...you need the key in the ignition to open the trunk...unless you then remove it and knowingly put it in your pocket, how is the key going to get into the trunk?

Are you inferring that some people keep the trunk open at all times and just dump their stuff in before a ride??

I'd see this as the only way this could happen...to avoid this, just open the trunk when you need to and you can never get your key locked in it...

Yes, you should leave the key in the ignition until you have placed all items in the trunk, but for many who have never had a trunk, it is not unnatural when you stop at an eatery to pop the trunk, pull the key out and put it in your pocket. If that happens to be your coat pocket and you are talking to gawking admirerers, and you toss the coat in the trunk, close the lid, go in to eat and not realize what you did until it's too late.
 
One scenario bone crusher. You ride somewhere. Stop to walk about a bit. Open the trunk to get out a few things. Pull the key and put it in your jacket pocket. Just as you are going to close the trunk, you decide that its a bit too warm to wear your jacket so you toss it in the trunk. Close the trunk and take off for your walk. Come back and search your pants pockets for the key. :yikes: Then you realize what you've done. :(
 
I see...

I usually only use the trunk to move things back and forth quickly...when I stop, I open it, drop my helmet/coat in, close it, and go...leave the key in the ignition...

I realize bikers are traditionally trained to take the key out of the ignition whenever they get off the bike...in this case, I could see this happening...I guess I've already conditioned myself to keep the key in the ignition so that I won't lock it in...haven't left it in the ignition and left the bike yet, so hopefully that won't happen either...otherwise, someone is getting a nice ride on my bike! argh!

My wife tried another wrinkle on this theme. We were at a hotrod-themed party, with lots of friends. Folks kept asking to see the trunk, so she just closed it, but left it unlatched against the popper spring. She put the key in her purse, and stuck that in the trunk. Someone either leaned on the trunk or dropped the lid too hard and it latched (probably her). next thing I knew I was on my way home on my BMW to fetch the spare key, in the rain. Anything that can go wrong...will!

The spare Spyder key is taped inside one of the side cases. A spare side case key is always in my wallet, and with a total of 4 keys supplied with the Givis the places to hide the others are almost endless. The reason I hang them around my neck is that 9 times out of 10 I find that I have got all dressed up to get on my bike, go to start up only to find that the key is buried in my pants pocket somewhere. With it around my neck it is fairly simple to open my jacket and retreive the key. I must admit though, the emergency trunk release sounds like a great idea.

Locked Key's

Funny thing I just did that yesterday as well at the IMS Show in San Mateo CA.
I had to have my wife bring the extra key up.:thumbup: I tried the tip of pulling on the cable but that did not work for mine.:( I put my key in my M/C Jacket pocket but yesterday I placed my jacket in the trunk to go into the show. I usually check twice to make sure I have it in some pocket before I shut the trunk. Yesterday I became distracted answering all the FAQ about the Spyder and dropped the lid. As soon as I did it I knew I had a problem :(
I'll be hiding a key or come up with a extra knob to unlatch.

I guess this just comes along with the grey hair!!!

The emergency trunk release modifications took less than two hours, counting the trip to the hardware store. Well worth the effort, just for the peace of mind. Pulling on the release cable didn't work for me, either.
