I'm so mad at myself. May have to be in hospital for back surgery ....

I have had back problems for many years. I have always been able to manage it with epidural blocks and over the counter meds. Tuesday last week it started acting up. I started being more careful of what I picked up and what I was doing.

Friday night I tossed and turned in the bed. I couldn't find a spot that it didn't hurt. Sat Morning I tried to get up and go to the restroom and I could not stand up. I had to have my wife help me just walk to the restroom. Later that day my back went into a spasm and I had to get my regular Dr. (which I work for) to come and give me some shot. I think it was Toradol. I finally have no pain but now I have a bigger issue.

I have 40% less strength in my left leg and a lot of my leg is numb and tingling.

I cant believe that the one event that I wanted to go to may be the one that I can't.

I work for a bunch of different doctors. One of them is also an orthopedic dr. I am going to be in his office in the morning at 8AM. My only worry is if there is something that will cause permanent damage. If he says it will get better over time then I will be there. However , it may be time for surgery.

Ill let yall know what I find out.

Blown Disc

I actually blew out L4-L5 from riding incorrectly (trying to keep up with my son on his crotch rocket on a twisting mountainous WV road). Surgery was a breeze and after recovery and a nice new Corbin seat I am better than before :) Although I wish nothing like this on you, if you do have to go through it, I pray  that you have the same success that I had

Titanium zipper here. With one suggestion. See a Neurologist. They know far more about the nervous system and the EXACT source of your problem than perhaps the BEST ortho will. Not speculation but a qualified opinion.

Whatever you do. Best of luck.

I've been in your shoes too many times....except the back surgery part. Hope the shots get you on your feet, but from my experience, it's best to stay close to home. You just never know when you have to "zig" and pay for it dearly. Calling for a rescue is never a good thing. :(

 Damn...
And you've just your bikes handling and riding the way that you like... :gaah:
Well... Let's hope that whatever course of action they take is successful!
Get healed quickly so that you can get back in the saddle!

Know what your going through..!!

Best of luck with the future of your back. Shots may get your through this time but it may be time to find a more permanent fix. As mentioned above you don't want something to wrong on the road...good luck..!!

So sorry to hear that, man. I've fortunately never had my back go completely out, but a couple of times I've had spasms so bad I too could barely move. Wasn't fun.

Hope you get better soon!!

Been there done that

L4/L5 herniated out had the surgery. Two years later L5/S1 blew out. Chronic denervation of lower extremities. Procedure for L5/S1 will only be done in an emergent case as there is far too much scar tissue from the L4/L5 procedure, couple that with the denervation and other disabilities and you get a 30% chance of coming off the op. table.

Don't wait till it is too late see the ortho and neuro to do what is best for you.

Good Luck and Always Stay Positive

Scar tissue. That's why I'm all about Neuros. One little nick of the spinal cord and my brain sunk to my chin......after hours of :barf::barf::barf::barf:they got me stabilized.

Twas a very close call.

Some learn by listening . some learn by doing.

It just makes me so upset to look out and see a half finished trailer. And to know that I missed spyderfest and was depending on this trip to meet everyone.

hey Rabtech I know what your talking about. 15 years ago I was in an accident at work(Drilling Rigs) and fell 70 feet. shattered my lower back thus resulting in 5 back operations. Like you I had severe pain and could barley move my left leg, crushed and herniated disc's were the cause, and some broken vertebrae. Im not telling you this to scare you just the opposite. Take care of your self do what the doc's say and in time it will get better not 100% but better. I had to walk with a walker at 30 years old for 2 years and then canes for about 7 years. Now I walk with hiking poles it looks more fashionable:roflblack::roflblack:. And this is why I ride A Spyder and the fact that it's fun as hell.

Drug issue

I, too, had severe lower back problems. Wife said the drug I was taking - a Statin - is a known cause of muscle problems. Got off Statins --- problem with back pain is gone! I use another drug now with no know side effects (age here: 77). Hope your back issues are as simple to cure.

I was taking a statin for something else. It can cause a host of other problems as I see you found out. I took myself off of it and told my dr.

rabtech,

Good luck with your problem.

My wife got a few weeks relief with the injections, but the neurosurgeon cured the pain completely in one day with outpatient surgery and very short recovery period.

Try anything and everything before going under the knife for back surgery. Remember... back surgery is not reversible. Been there having to make the same decision. Glad I held off on getting cut.

Traction and proper back exercises worked wonders for me,

Good luck... hope you can make the trip.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I too have the same problem too.
I am only 49 but have had 3-bike acc- and had to learn how to walk again in the early 80. What you said about in the morning and so on is what I have and last week I hit pay dirt. The doc started out with the L4 and my knee and so on which I have heard, for so many years that I can say it in my sleep. But this time my wife was with me and I have keep this from her for so many years it was time to come clean.

Now this time was different the doc told me that my right hip ligaments that go to your tailbone were damaged so bad that it was moving on it own causing it to push on the nerve ending causing numbness and some times to be paralyzed. I was told there is no fix for this but he had a new type belt I could wear to pull my hip in to my tailbone. It is called The BOA Brace and I will have to wear this for the rest of my life.

I have been pain, numbness, and drug free for 4 day’s. The wife and I have been having a lot of fun now that I can mover around with this brace on and it is not that big. Now at night I use a Home depot back belt around my hips and lower back plus a pillow between my knees but I wake up pain free now.

Talk to your doc and ask for them to really look at your x-ray. It toke close to 30 year for me but I hope you end up better faster.

I've worked outpatient and inpatient physical therapy and couldn't agree with you more.

I'm in the doctors office. They are going to do a nerve test and a new lumbar MRI. Its the waiting that sucks.
