Riding with the trailer

I want to purchase the RT 622 trailer and I was wondering if there was any particular ways I should be riding i.e.: shifting and speed. Thank you.

Riding with the Trailer

Nanoo-
First, you will not even notice the trailer when connected to the RT. Of course, your MPG will be less, but you find that the trailer tracks smoothly and effortlessly.
One negative- you should not use the speed control when towing, and that's kind of a drag.

I have a 2011 SE Model. That is too bad that I can't use the speed control, it kind of defeat the purpose. Do you know the reason why it can't be used?

I was reading the article about the "Do's and don't" when riding the Spyder and that's why I was asking if there was a different way of riding if I had the trailer attached.

I thank you all for your input.

I have a 2010 spyder with SE5 transmission. When I pull the RT622 trailer I turn on the trailer mode and that changes the way the spyder you shift gears,(hold the gear longer before shifting to next gear). If you have SE5 then put spyder into trailer mode. If you have the SM5 transmission then you do not have to put the spyder into trailer mode you just shift gears like you would do without the trailer.

I've never heard that you shouldn't use cruise control when pulling the trailer. I have a 2010 SE and have used cruise control on all my trip without any problem. Guess I need to get the manual out.:sour:

I pull a RT622 trailer and use the cruise control with no problems. When driving on roads with many hills you may want to take it off of cruise control. The trailer tows great, you hardly know it is behind you. I think it helps keep the Spyder maintain a straight line. When towing use the trailer mode or shift/downshift at higher rpms.

Read your manual about pulling a trailer.

Put the SE5 into the trailer-mode before pulling a trailer. The manual provides a warning about pulling a trailer without using trailer-mode. I'll let you be the judge if you chose not to... but... do so at your own risk.

Trailer-mode with the SE5 forces you to shift at the higher speeds/RPM's. You may push the shift paddle, but it won't shift until you get to a higher speed. Using the trialer-mode is a good lesson in getting used to higher shift-points.

You should not have trouble using cruise control when pulling a trailer as long as you are on level terrain. However, if you are not on level terrain you are going to need to be shifting to keep the RPM's "up" to keep from lugging your Spyder. Don't "lug" your Spyder -- especially when pulling a trailer.

Lastly... watch the weight you pack into the trailer.

Good luck to you and have fun!

Thank you all for your input, this is great information.

Another reason to use Trailer-Mode is that is tells the "Nanny" you are pulling more weight. It makes adjustments to itself to adjust for the added weight. Braking, stability, and traction controls are all affected to accommodate for the trailer for added safety purposes.

Ride safe and enjoy!

Trailers!

Not to discourage anyone from an RT-622, I think the 622 is cool...I couldn't bring myself to spend that money yet. I bought an aluminum, "America's Best" trailer in South Carolina. Doesn't look as good, cost $1,500. That Made it look better, in fact, it looked real good.
Had my dealer put a hitch on and took trailer to dealership to make sure it worked. Couldn't be happier with tracking and the RT has had no ILL effects from the four pin wiring set-up. Trailer mode is a great thing when you consider what your Spyder is doing for you and your safety. Not to mention that the Spyder is far and away a better platform for trailering than a typical trike or two wheeler. Dragging my ugly trailer to spyderfest for sure. Might trade it for a 622 when I get there. God Bless!!!
