Rocky Mountain National Park

We are planning a trip to Colorado in July. Wanting to know if anyone else has had their Spyder through Rocky Mountain National Park and were there any issues with performance in the higher elevations. I understand there are no service stations through the park if you've been through it how did you do on gas? I am going with three other couples that have Harley's and they tend to get further on a tank of gas than I do. Please reply with your experiences.

You are going to love it. I went in Oct 2012. I rode the whole thing in both directions on my 2012 LTD. I had no issues at all other than the wind when heading back southbound. It can become very windy at the top and it can come from all directions. There is a visitor center at the top. Keep your RPM's up and you will be fine. You might get an engine warning lightup near the top if your RPM's are too low. Gas is available at both ends. I used the Gas Station locator on my Garmin, or Gas Buddy App on Android.


My trip was a week in the area. I followed the Shamrock Tour of CO (Roadrunner mag) and used Silverthorne Co as my base. Amazing every day. The roads are in good condition.:clap:
Also when your in the area Independence Pass is a nice ryde. And do not forget the ultimate, Beartooth Pass east of Yellowstone in MT.:yikes:

very fine colo. ride, but remember SPYDER dealers, are very sparce!!, (few & far between) ( I carry a trunk full of spare part's !! just in case) wirh the bigg-e dealer's at Denver, Gr. Jct. & Durango

Thanks for the heads up and info! I will have my 20,000 mile service done before I go so i should be in good shape!

If you're in RMNP, you're equidistant between the Can Am dealer in Denver (RPM) and Cheyenne Wy. (High Country Motorsports); about an hour either direction.

No worries about gas. Just also be aware, on a hot July day with the thin air, with stop and go traffic, your Spyder may run a bit hotter than down in town. Just make sure your cooling system is in good shape.

This from a local. Summer construction / tourist season traffic kind of sucks, unless you're stopping often to look at the views, hike, whatever. Best times for riding are early mornings or late afternoons; worst times are weekends about 10am & 3pm when everyone's either coming or going.

I have been to RMNP in a car. We came in through Estes Park and It was the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Sounds like an amazing journey, please bring back photos.ray::doorag:

Also be aware of the temperature swings. We visited Colorado in July a few years ago and had temps from 40 degress early morning in the mountains to 75 degrees in the foothills.

If you have a few extra coins, you could look at getting maps from Butler Maps. They have some great route information about the Rockies. Their book of the Rockies is also good. It has more details of the routes to include sights, road-types, skill-level, food, and etc. I liked the info. I have the maps and book. However, they do not give it away.:shocked:
