• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I just replaced our battery on a 2011RT A/C with 26.7k miles. I was looking for a date on the battery and could only find a computer generate stencil on the side.. RE09CH.. Is it safe to assume this battery was manufactured in 2009, sat on a shelf and placed in our Spyder 05/2011.

I battery only starts to wear after the electrolyte is installed and the battery has it's first charging. I always keep a Battery Tender Jr. on my Spyder's battery to keep it fully charged when it's not in use.

Since you're already here... What was that brand of battery that you liked so much?

Bob, Motobatt MBTX 24U......it's rated quite a bit higher than OEM, exact same size and can be found for much less on-line......I saw one for $80 about 6 mos. ago.....you can actually earmark it on E-bay and they will E-mail you when they have it on sale somewhere.......AFTER Santa gives me my present this year ( a welder ...shush don't tell ) I plan to get an MBTX 30U which is slightly larger ...it is rated at 32 amp/hrs....and sells for about the same price on sale....I need the welder to make the Battery holder on the Spyder slightly larger to fit ......Not a problem for meeeeeeeeeeeee :gaah:

Mike, since our Battery's are GEL-MAT .....they come sealed when they are manufactured.....and the shelf life is very long IMHO......Mike :thumbup:

Sulfation will seriously degrade and eventually destroy a lead acid battery. Thus, batteries that must be stored for a length of time before being put into first use are usually stored dry.

You have no control how long a battery is stored before you purchase your vehicle so you're at the mercy of the manufacturer or dealer to do it right. However once you own it never store it for longer then a week or so without keeping it on a microprocessor controlled battery tender such as the Deltran tenders.

Jim, AGM ( gel-mat ) batteries are sealed.....so they must come from the manufactorer that way .......correct ??????Mike....:thumbup:

Truth be told though, they often do because it's impractical to keep them all on chargers, so some sulfation may occur before you even own it. My new RS-S came with a new battery which would not take a proper charge. The dealer had to swap it out with another. He said that happens a lot and for my trouble he gave me a Deltran Battery Tender Jr. for free.

All I'm saying is that when the battery is in your hands never let it get sulfated. AGM batteries are even more prone to charging issues than standard lead acid batteries.
 
What about the new high tech LiPo batteries? Anyone try 'em or know if they have adverse effects on the Spyder's computers?

What would it be about them that might give the computers fits? :dontknow:

As long as the voltage is correct; shouldn't that keep them happy?

While my battery is still good on my 2011 I have my eyes on the new Shorai Lithium Ion. It is a pricey battery but if you can afford it is a really monster. The LFX36A3-BS12 puts out 540 CCA and 36 A/Hr and fits easily with room to spare. Lithium Iron do not sulfate and hold the charge much longer. It wieghts less than 5 lbs to boot! They can use a standard battery charger but to get the most of I will need to buy the charge and store battery managment system so the total will come close to $400.00 but the the extra capacity will give great peace of mind to me. Other than the price they are getting rave reviews.

I have 15K on my bike now and every so often the battery has not got enough omph to push past top dead center although it always starts the second time so I see a new battery in the near future ;)

The battery would not hold voltage long enough to crank. I had it on a slow 2amp charge for 24hrs. It was at 12.9 volts, when I hit the PTS, it dropped to 9.3volts. I never thought that a tender was necesary since the spyder is ridden 3-4 times a week. After installing the new battery.. High Performance ytx24hl, I checked for charging rate and it is 14.2volts. While it was all apart I checked connections for looseness/corrosion, all was good. Now I'm sure the battery was at 2/3's it cycle when it was installed by the info I found chisled on the side.

We are both right. If I buy a battery from manufactures warehouse it came sealed from the factory, but If a dealer purchases a number of batteries for stock the battery come dry and when the dealer sells the battery the dealer fills battery from included acid tubes to create a sealed, spill-proof battery. That's how the Yuasa YUAM7250H YTX24HL battery are sold. I don't know how BRP purchases thier batteries.

Spyder batteries come in two forms...dry charged and factory charged. The Spyders were originally shipped with dry charged batteries, but problems with the dealers failing to allow time after filling for the glass mats to absorb the acid, and failures to charge them sufficiently before laying them on their sides and installing them, led to numerous premature failures. It is my understanding that they now come factory prepared in the Spyder, but replacement batteries may still be dry charged. The dry-charged version should have a longer shelf life. If you want the best battery available, I would consider a lithium-iron battery. They are lightweight, durable, and don't lose a charge sitting idle (except for parasitic losses).
