RT - 622 Trailer

Talk about being disappointed. Just bought an Rt-622 Trailer for my 2011 RT. Got a great deal and now I understand why. The trailer had been sitting on the showroom floor for several years. Although new, it was a 2010 model. Paid to have a hitch put on my bike and when the connection was made, not all the lights on the trailer worked, specifically the yellow turn signals and the backup lights. The dealer told me they contacted BRP and were told the bike and trailer weren't compatible. I think it's pretty lousy of Can Am to put a product out there that doesn't work. Any suggestions on where I can go to rectify this situation.

The backup lights do not operate on the trailer. In 2010 the trailers had yellow turn signal lights but in later years they changed them. If you have turn signals that operate you are all set. Did they add the "water management kit" to your trailer? That is one thing you definitely want to have on it.

How can a trailer not be compatible with the bike? Maybe they changed the wiring configuration but it shouldn't be hard go fix it on the trailer. I am building a trailer and plan to have a hitch and stock wiring done on my RT SE Then plan to match the trailer to the plug on the bike. Is my thinking wrong? Am I looking for trouble here :yikes:

The entire wiring harness on the 2010 RT model line is significantly different than the 2011-2012 RT model line. There was a lot of reduction in the wiring harness to make the bikes less prone to false signals causing limp mode. The 2010 RT trailer can be made to work, but it will take a little trial and error on your part. Do a search of the Forum as this should be covered by earlier posts.

I have a 2012 RT/LTD and a 2010 RT-622 and everything is a perfect match, I've had no issues, sounds like human error on this one.

As others have said your trailer and bike is fine, in fact you have the best model trailer. The 2010 trailer as all the bulbs and more importantly the sockets. 2011 and on wards the reversing lights are blanked out, no socket to add a bulb. None of the trailers ever had reversing light, the bulbs are yellow and are wired as additional turn signals.

options:

You can wire the turn signal light in with the brake wire, really simple to do, just remove the black plastic covers at the rear of the trailer. Locate the left light plug, cut the gray wire and splice it into the white wire using a positap or similar. Do the same on the right side, can not remember the brake wire color on that side but its in the same location. Now when you use your turn signal the other lights will work. However they will also light up when you brake which is fine, you can change the bulbs to red if you like, I left mine orange/yellow and there fine. Gets people attention.

You can leave the reversing light wired in with the turn signal or you can wire up with a remote as a reversing light. Phil's mods http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?24907-Phil-s-Mods/page5 shows you how to do it. I bought a 4 channel RF remote $29.99 and a strip of 25 meter white lights on a roll from eBay $20. I put white bulbs in the reversing lights, separated the wire from the turn signal and wired into one of the channels in the remote. I don't use them all the time but on dark nights I can turn them on. ( there is no reverse feed out of the bike). I then took the 25 meter roll of LED and stuck them on the inside lip of the trailer and wired to one of the other channels on the remote. The lights are hidden under the lip but when on light up the entire trailer.

I also added rgb LEDs on the inside of the lid edge and as a halo on the underneath but that's another story.

enjoy your trailer, you got the best year and paid a lot less.

The 2010 trailers had the separate turn signals, but the 2011 and later trailers do not. None of the trailers have back-up lights. The trailers utilize the same style lights, for aesthetics, but the function is different. The 2010 RT trailer modules had some problems, so the newer ones no longer provide the signals needed to operate the separate turn signals. If your RT-622 has them, it will function as a later trailer, with combined turn/brake lights, because of the trailer module. What you have is working normally...and exactly like a brand new version of the trailer would work.

BTW, if you do have the 2010 trailer, get the water management kit if it was not already installed (tray under the front of the rear lid). These were being provided free of charge, but that program may no longer be in effect. It is worth it even if you have to pay for it.

:agree:

I purchased the ESi back up kit, which consists of two white bulbs, a pin for each trailer light plug and some wire. I have a 2010 trailer and 2012 RT.

The Newer hitch module does not send power to the reverse wire so it does not work. :(

You would think that this could be done, I would like to see separate turn and brake wire along with reverse wire.

I picked up my brand new 2010 trailer in August 2012 and the dealer fitted the drip tray (water management kit, go to love marketing terms ) free of charge.

Just a thought he for the electronic gurus.

Just thinking aloud here, there are plenty of RF 12volt relays but they all seem to come with keyring transmitters.

Wondering if you could wire in a RF relay in the trailer to turn on the reverse lights. I sort of have this already with a 4 channel receiver.

Then and this is the bit I can not find, wire in a transmitter to the rear of the spyder and tap the power from the reverse lights.

Put the spyder in reverse power goes to transmitter, receiver turns on the reverse lights. Take the spyder out of reverse and the power is cut to the transmitter and the lights go out on the trailer.

Any ideas..

What about looking nto the wiring that comes with backup cameras. They go into reverse and the video screens come on. I am far from an elec. guru, somits just a thought.

Solution to problem is to trade your 2011RT for a 2010. If you buy a 2010 RT, the yellow lights will work.

I had an issue with mine and they fixed & replaced under warranty the harness
on my 2010 RTS. Now I have no yellow lights except the front side markers are
still in amber. The turn signals work just fine.

I would suggest that you be add the third brake light and consider also the LED
mud flaps from ESI. The photo above has neither. I've got to take a photo with
those added as it clearly is a great safety addition.

I have not had the need to have back up light on my trailer, as I am usually
backing up at a commercial establishment that provides adequate lighting or in my garage.

What was said about making sure the water tray has been added is most useful:thumbup:

Actually, they won't unless you also have a 2010 trailer module. The newest modules only provide 4-wire trailer lighting...no matter what year Spyder they are installed on.

:agree:, but he has a 2011 RT and just purchased a new 2010 RT-622 with an original module

I doubt that the module was a 2010. If it was recently purchased, it will likely be the later model. The trailer hitches and modules are sold separately, and do not come with the trailer. The fact that he has a later module is evident by the fact that the separate turn signals do not light. The wiring is there on the trailer, but the newer modules just don't support it. BTW, there were a few modules produced in 2011 that had both functions, but these also had a high failure rate, and they were discontinued soon thereafter.

We have a 2010 RT and then bought a 2010 trailer. All the lights did not work so we took it to our dealer. After a lot of headaches we were told that when we ordered the hitch and module we got a 2011. Our mechanic called BRP and after many phone calls he finally located a 2010 module. He was told that there were only about 6 left in inventory anywhere in the US. We now have all the lights except back up lights. If you contact BRP they may still have the other 5 modules in a back room where they found ours. Good luck!!!

I just purchased a new black 2010 RT-622 trailer yesterday that was still in the crate at a great price. I traveled 4 hours one way to pick it up and upon arrival the dealer was completing the assembly, including the water management system and the protective film was on it. I have a 2011 RTS and I'm awaiting for my trailer hitch to come in (still on back order). I hope I don't have the issues that some of the others have had.

They couldn't get my lock to stay in and said that BRP had a service bulletin to replace the lock assembly on the trailer. I was told to contact my local dealer when I got back home to have it fixed under warranty. I searched on this site last night for suggestions and I was able to get my lock to stay in and work properly. This site is great and addictive.:2thumbs:

I wasn't in the market for a trailer yet but my wife saw how much extra room they offer and decided we should get one. I called about 50 dealers within a 6 hour drive from me looking for a demo/clearance model and found one in a PA. I found one in Maine at a great price but it's a little to far to travel this time of the year. If your near the Maine area and want a new 2010 black or silver trailer for $1500.00 see this link http://www.huffforestproducts.com/trailers.asp.

Now I just need that hitch to arrive.
