SPYDER RTS/SE5 VS. GL1800 TRIKE

I have just been reading all the articles on the Spyder and the Goldwing Trikes. I have had both and I am on both sites, plus I added Bayliners Owners Club (BOC) now that I have just purchased another Bayliner Cruiser.
It is interesting when you compare the Spyder and the Wing. I purchased my 2011 RTS/SE5 last year and it was about $27,000. This year I purchased a used 05 GL1800 Lehman Trike for $27,000 also. I put 5,000 miles on the Spyder and was very happy with it. I was one of the fortunate owners who didn't have any troubles. I was averaging 35 mpg and shifted around 3100 rpm and let off of the throttle. It was smooth as silk. My favorite thing about the Spyder was the reverse gear. A real reverse gear, not just the use of the starter motor as in the GL. However, they both do the job of backing out of the parking spot. LOL.
As far as the different engines go, obviously the Wing is smoother. Six cyclinders will always be smoother then two. I have had many two cylinder motorcycles and besides the fact they look like the Harley's there was too much vibration for me. I like smooth and quiet.
The Goldwing Trikes really hold their value over the years due to their GREAT reputation for being bulletproof and still running with over 200,000 miles on them and NO major engine repairs or rebuilds. There are soooooo many computers and sensors on the Spyder that it can be a nightmare to service if things go wrong. When I bought my Spyder I purchased the Zurich 84 month warranty from EAST COAST CYCLE CENTER in Bensalem, Pa., where I purchased both my 3 wheelers. For 7 years I don't have to worry about paying for computer repairs or engine repairs. I slept better at night knowing this. LOL.
I will admit that is was tons of fun driving the Spyder. I sure got plenty of attention when I pulled into the gas stations. LOL. I felt like I was piloting a spaceship compared to riding a GL1800 Trike. The Spyder transmission was as smooth as silk. No shifting was lots of fun also and the automatic downshift was pretty good also. You couldn't beat all the storage on the Spyder either. I loved having 4 storage areas.
I will say the the Spyder is alot lighter then the Wing. The Spyder weighed in about 929 and the Wing Trike weighs in about 1150. That is a big difference. However, when you are on three wheels the weight doesn't bother you. Also the wing is 1832cc compared to 998cc so it has no problem handing the weight difference. It is interesting how both machines have about the same horsepower. (just over 106 or so).
The prices for options on the Spyder are really high. The Wing isn't cheap either. I am glad my Wing has the CB on it. I just purchased the boom mike/headphone so that I can talk to all the truckers out there on channel 19. LOL.
All in all I enjoy both machines. Each one is unique in its own way. I traded in my 2011 Canam Spyder for the 2005 GL1800 Lehman Trike because the Trike just looked soooooo cool with all the BLING the previous owner put on it. I would keep both, but my garage just won't handle more toys. I already have my 05 Mini Cooper convertible in there too.
Good luck to all the Trikers out there. When two wheelers at over 900 lbs. get too heavy to push around, I know all of you will enjoy the 3 wheel experience. I feel safer and more secure and more visible with the Trikes.'

Nice write up, Gordon. I paid $31K for my RT-S SE5 which included CB, GPS, XM radio, foot rest, flashing stop light and extended warranty. When warranty expires, BR1 is gone. I have had two problems in my 8,000 miles....a power steering sensor (50 miles to the dealer, 1 hour replace and 50 miles back home) and a ECM and Throttle Body outage (six weeks plus for parts and repair and the 100 miles round trip twice...one to haul BR1 there and again to pick him up) Both a pain in the AXE.

BR1 is fun to ride and I enjoy the auto shift...as I have said my GW Motor Trike with 62K on it has never been in the shop or quit on me...BR1 did twice. GW has power and torque plus as you say. I have kept both and like to ride both as they are different rides. Your trike is a knockout....ha ha Punkin' is just old plain Punkin'.

Nice write up, but I still wouldn't give a plug nickel for for a GW1800 - it is NOT a comfortable ride for a larger person.

Thanks to both of you for the nice compliments on my article. I just got back from a 100 mile trip down RT.206S towards Hammonton, New Jersey. It was a beautiful day to ride. Temps were around 73. It was a bit windy, but didn't effect my Trike at all. Now it's time to relax and chill for a while before din din.

I do love my "WINGBLING" a new nickname I just thought of. LOL

The wife and I have owned both of the Syders, an 08 GS and a 2010 RTS.
The GS didn't give too many problems at first but the RTS was a pain in the
a$$ from the start, that being said, we did enjoy ridding them when they
were not in the shop. But we are going to Biketoberfest on Saturday to
ride the Goldwing trike from CSC and maybe the new RT's just to compare
the two before we get a new trike next year. We are leaning towards the
Goldwing due to the fact that it is more reliable and I have owned a Goldwing
before I traded it for the RTS. I like many features of the Spyders but just
can't get pasted the bad experience I had with my RTS but maybe willing
to think about giving it another chance somewhere down the road after
more changes have been made and they have proven themselves to be
more reliable machines.

Gordon, I have a couple of comments, made on my experience with my GW Motor Trike and 2011 RT-S SE5 only....
I use regular gas in both. Have never used premium in either....both run well.
I constantly get 32 on my Wing and 30 on my Spyder....seldom more, seldom less. I don't worry about gas mileage as I ride. Speed limits near my home are 75 and 80 (going to 85 soon)
I can buy a new2012 GW Motor Trike with no bling for $28,000. My loaded Spyder including taxes was $31K+
My Wing stero and CB are MUCH better than my Spyder.
Wing controls are much more user friendly and smoother.
I change my Mobil 1 and Honda filter for $32. My last oil/filter change at dealer was $189 "with my discount"
I can adjust my valves every 35-40K myself....I am afraid to ask the dealer how much they will charge for BR1 and how often needed.

I know some do their own Spyder valves and oil/filter changes and I appreciate their skills, which I don't have.

Hopefully the 2013 model year for :spyder2: will have less reliability problems since they are now on their 6th iteration of the product. If it continues to have computer glitches and reliability problems--I could see a potential problem on the horizon.

I have been relatively free of problems on the four :ani29:'s I have owned. The 2010 RTS (29,000 miles), has seen more shop time this year than all the other :spyder2:'s combined. Everyone knows I am not a patient person so time will tell what will transpire next riding season.
