Gas smell after riding Spyder - Solved!

I bought my used RS in January of this year, and a few months later started noticing a strong gas smell when I parked it in the garge after a ride. At first, I thought the gas smell might be due to the rising temps here in Phoenix and I even modifed the evap cannister vent tube, believing it was the casue of the problem.
I finally discovered the true source of the gas smell - a loose-fitting fuel connector (see pic). I found this only after I started the bike one day and gas started dripping from under the skins on the right side, making a big puddle on the garage floor. The quick-connect fuel fitting was so loose, I can't understand how it could ever NOT leak. My fix was to remove the quick-connect fitting and clamp the hose directly to the nipple coming out of the fuel tank. It's been a couple weeks now and no gas smell!
Soooo...if your Spyder smells like gas after a ride, check that connector - if it's loose, it may be leaking.

 Excellent detective work!

The quick connect fitting is available separately, as another option. There are two different ones on the Spyder. That one is P/N 709000141, MSRP $7.49. It also requires an Oetiker clamp P/N 293650046, MSRP $2.32. I'd highly recommend a full seal type of clamp on any fuel line.

And what exactly would be a 'full seal' type of clamp?

Carl
A full seal type of clamp has an extra band of metal that goes across the closure area, putting even pressure on the hose, and not leaving a gap or flat spot like some other clamps. The Oetiker clamps are available in both types. I like to think of them as gapped and gapless.

Thank you for that explanation! :firstplace:
Now my head hurts from all of the extra knowledge that got poured into it! :roflblack:

Thanks Scotty.

I've seen those, but do not know how you would remove and install them.

The Oetiker clamps take special pliers to crimp them. They are sort of like tile nippers, which might work as a substitute. I think automotive fuel injection clamps take a special tool, too.

I had the exact same thing happen to me earlier this year. I too could not believe how it could ever NOT leak! I used the same fix and have about 4k miles on it since with no issues.

So does the RS have an evap cannister like the RT?

just last night i had this same problem rear its ugly head .got to work , and a big puddle of gas under the right side of the bike .luckily the gas drizzle stopped after i shut it off .found this thread last night so after making it home without catching fire i fixed the problem .the fitting that BRP puts on theses bikes is going to fail .it is inevetible , especially in colder climes .i have been smelling a bit of gas for about a month but did not see a leak anywhere until last night .the BRP fitting is sloppy and the O ring inside the fitting has too big of an inside diameter .there is no resistance at all when you push it on the tube .i replaced the fitting with a quick connect stab that i think is for late model GM vehicles .you can get one from CTC or ideal supply etc .it fits on the tube nice and tight and snaps on without slop .this is a safety issue that i am surprised has not caused a recall .most members here that have this problem seem to be just clamping to the tube .i dont feel this is adequate as the tube has no barbs or any way to stop the hose from sliding off . a clamp might seal for a long time but without a ridge on the tube to give a positive seal , the joint will fail .these fittings cost less than 10 dollars and also retain the quick disconnect feature of the factory fitting (but you need a small plastic release tool that is also pretty cheap )my bike is a 2009 gs with 5600 km on it .
